How common is Highwall in 40-90 SS?

Print Post
When I originally acquired the Highwall in 40-90 SS (it letters 1887 as currently configured) I was under the miss-guided impression that it was relatively rare (the only reason I wanted it was due to the "supposed" Sharps caliber). But, over the years I have seen a few listed and am just curious as to the estimated quantities produced. It is a western style rifle that is worn enough to be a shooter rather than a closet queen.

Thank you,
Charles

This information was in " The Winchester Collector " a few years ago              40-90SS             653               _    40-90BALLARD      _104  _40-90 _with no letters as to straight or bottle neck  278  . It is a little hard to tell what the last one is but one can get an idea that they are not real plentiful.

Hello,

I have (slowly) been working on an updated caliber survey of the Winchester Single Shot (a.k.a. Model 1885). My best estimate for the number of 40-90 Sharps Straight chambered high-walls is 920 - 940. Thus far, I have personally surveyed (41) 40-90 Sharps chambered high-walls, and interestingly enough, the majority of them were made with a 32-inch No. 4 barrel.
