Hi Frog: I'd like another too (or three).
The wedge seems to hve been installed with two vertical screws that were installed by clamping the wedge in place and then drilling, tapping, and cutting off the screw, finishing to fit the wedge contour. The three barrels I have are one piece as well. I'm still working on the "wreck" bought at auction. The wedge on that one was evidently for the large rim ctg, and a piece was added, not by the factory, to the face of the breech as a shim. Workmanlike, it was soldered in place and had two small pins as well. Sooo, I took that shim off and have to create a new one. BTW if you ever want to index the action for any reason, a 1 inch round bar fits the barrel cutout perfectly, and a couple of well-padded radiator clamps will hold it.

Thanks, Don!  That is some useful information to add to my Maynard file.  The 1" dowel as a "handle" could be quite useful when working on an action.  I want to get so I feel as comfortable doing minor routine work on the Maynard as I do with the 'walls.

Regards,
Froggie

Buffler, You got me confused. What do you mean by indexing the action?  I've been working on the percussion models for about 20yr and do some work on single action pistols. But when I think of indexings pistols I think of cocking the hammer and watching the cylinder turn.
Take a look at your barrels breach face where the rim of the cartridge contacts the barrel. Is there a round slightly protruding area about the size and shape of a penny? Also, look ,(I don't have my barrel here right now but I think its about 5 inches from the breach end,) to see if you see a very slight line. The line is fainter then the line on the receiver where the wedge is placed to convert from percussion to CF. If you see these than your barrel is a 2nd model conversion. I talked to Larry Romano today and ordered a 38-55 barrel. During our conversation he left me with the idea that all or most  of the Maynard barrels were in fact converted but, I may have misunderstood him as we were not specifically talking about that subject.
Now, for a different question do we always use blackpowder in our Maynards?

My opinion is based upon extensive research of the historical records which mostly reside in U.S. government repositories which prove beyond any doubt that Dr. Edward Maynard was far beyond being a smart fellow as has been credited to him above.  In fact, most people who are knowledgeable about Maynard's life, accomplishments, and achievements believe, as I do, that he was a brilliant man in many areas of endeavor.

I'm thinking of having a barrel made for my 1882 model 15. Who do you suggest? Can you use  makers like Douglas and have someone machine the under barrel lugs and weld them onto the barrel? What cartridge would you suggest and why?

Once the barrel blank (the reamed to diameter tube) and then rifled whether single point cut rifling or by modern times hammer forged, it would be improper to weld on anything to the tube's exterior.

The reason for that is the high temperature which is produced by electric-arc welding (heli-arc) will distort the interior dimensions of the rifled tube producing either a tight spot or a loose spot at the point where the heat was applied during the welding process.

Consider, however, the same set of facts, but instead of applying the high heat of arc welding, one could consider the use of the silver solder method, but in so doing, fail to achieve the joint strength that heli-arc welding will produce.

Additionally consider, if the under lugs were to be fitted into dove tails first, then silver soldered in place, a stronger joint would result over merely the silver soldered alone joint.

DISCLAIMER --- Do Not attempt to add Maynard style under lugs to a firearms barrel, as  distinct and separate component parts, by any methods whatsoever, as such procedures and processes for attaching additional pieces may diminish the strength of the component parts and the resulting assembly, thereby causing a parts or assembly failure with resulting personnel injury and/or property damage.
