I like Stevens rifles in general, and the 49 Walnut Hill is up near the top! I'm not as fond of the look on the second generation 417 Walnut Hill model, but that doens't mean it isn't a wonderful shooting gun still!
The early models were just more elegant, and refined in appearance and options.

I like Stevens rifle's too! I have a 417 heavy model that will shoot a 250 any time the shooter is up to it. Slow lock time a barrel band and a three pound trigger and no through bolt. Oh well, guess I'll just have to live with it.  Grin  Thats a perty #49 there marlinguy!  Smiley

I found a 417 1/2 at Denver two years ago, this is with a lighter 28" barrel, less bulk in the butt  and a thinner forend, no barrel band, knob end lever. Basically a super squirrel rifle.  There is nice feather figure in the butt and  I would like to get the stocks checkered but that would reduce its value, these are much scarcer than the heavy 417 and are at a premium to Stevens cranks, looked for one for a long time.  Apparently also, as I recall  the parts lists, there were I think three different hammer/trigger configurations for the 417 series as Stevens worked on improving it.

I shot a heavy (not bull) 417 in high school and the trigger did not stay put, had it about two years and to the gunsmiths at G&H in NYC three or four times.   It had the very short hammer fall and a heavy mainspring which apparently wore out the hammer sear.   This lighter rifle has the same setup.

By the way the 417 action is not good for .22 Hornet, supposedly gets loose.

I have an early higher grade one. It's rare, but how rare I'm trying to figure out. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Mine is a fully engraved #44[ about 90% thinning case]. It has 1/2 octagonal to round barrel 28", !" diameter,  about 95% blue, .22 short, no sights, Stevens 6x scope, fully checkered, Nickel Swiss butt plate.
Gun is amazingly accurate given that the bore is what I'd call good indicating early life probably with BP shorts. In don't have it in front of me but the gun is 1905-1910.

Not worth the powder to blow it up. Send it to me I need a parts gun like that.

We need pictures. Unless of course you want to send it to me and I can post the pictures after I take them?

You guys are simply too generous. Grin How about if I shoot somebody a couple e-mail pics and you can post them here since I seem to be lousy at posting images on the forum. What picture host do you folks use? Quote:
