Set Trigger Assembly On Trapdoor Springfield

Has anyone done a double-set trigger assembly on a Trapdoor Springfield? It looks fairly straight forward, almost like fitting one in a muzzleloader. Is there any "hidden" problems to look out for? I am thinking it would look great on a current Geemer-style carbine project.  Thanks.

I haven't done one yet but have an action just waiting.....

Any 2-lever DST can be adapted, as you state, so the real problem becomes the fly in the tumbler. When the time comes to build my action, I intend to copy one of the flies I've seen on other sidelocks. Maybe you might try this same approach if no one else has a more definite solution.

I've found that the trapdoor arsenal trigger and grip layout & dimensions are quite thick and club-like when compared to a typical custom sporter. IMO particular attention should be paid to this problem when choosing a DST assembly and TG, and when contemplating the layout & shaping of the grip area of the trapdoor sporter. Most of the custom trapdoor sporters I've seen have appeared bulky and ill-shaped, and it's a shame because this action can be one of the most graceful when the shaping is done well.

I've found that it helps immeasurably to first make a full-size tracing of the barrelled action and then lay out several temporary stock shapes on it, to compare with other actions' dimensions & stock treatments.
Good luck, Joe

The Rifle Shoppe sells casting parts to make a trapdoor set trigger.
Don't know anyone who has used their parts to make one. I have ordered cast parts from them and had some work wonderful and some a little undersized. For what it's worth.

MerwinBray;
The Rifle Shoppe websight only lists a single-set trigger. Do they also have a double-set assembly that I am missing? I am using a Hawken-style triggerguard on my project and a single-set kinda gets lost in all that room. Thanks.

Fly & tumbler design might be the same though, worth a try for just those parts IMO.
Good luck, Joe

Flatlander,
One of the things about Rifle SHoppe is to see everything they have, ya gotta buy the catalog. It is a little pricy but chock full of stuff. They are currently working out ballard actions and parts, both Merwin Bray ballards and the later Marlin stuff too.
I will try to dig out my current catalog and try to find the info for you. Could take a few!

DIdn't take long at all!
They list it as "SPringfield set triggers (533)".
They have the trigger, trigger plate, trigger guard bow, trigger main spring, trigger knock off and bar and the fly for tumbler. All combined will run about 106.00, give or take. Sounds like you would have to cut for the fly in your tumbler as they don't list one cut for a fly, however, they do have the standard tumbler listed under the regular trapdoor stuff. Seperate listing, same page. Keep in mind, these are all castings and would need some kind of treating, i.e.. kasenit or something. Probably need the springs tempered as well. The catalog has a treatise on how to do this in the back.
Hope this helps, If you go forward keep us posted, I am sure many of us have thought about a set trigger on a trapdoor. I have a few misc. stocks and parts just waiting for something to happen to them!

This sounds like an interesting project for some of the trapdoor parts I have! Can someone give me the web address for The rifle Shoppe?
Thanks, Norm

greetings all,

a dst from a tc hawken fits very nicely into a trapdoor. howsomever, would recomend the deerslayer replace hawken trigger from davis (40.00) itis a tuned trigger and has no vibration or 'snap'.

anyone who is familier with the use of a pen knife can install it in a few minuets..

goodluck and ...ttfn..grampa..

for the davis trigger address go to the muzzleloading forum and look in their links.

while there, you mite really enjoy the forum. shoot a lot of flintlocks myself and thought i knew it all. after being on that forum for awhile did i ever find out how little i knew..

PS.. not really, just wanted to sound modest Grin Grin

xxgrampa,
That sounds like an interesting possibility! and a lot cheaper. I realized last night that the rifle shoppe set is a dirrect copy of an original and is a single set trigger, not a double.
But I like the sounds of the Davis.

Were you to decide to go with a single trigger, that hawken gaurd can be reshaped so the trigger looks correct in the loop.  Its not that big of a deal to change the radius and attach a new threaded stud.

were some of the Officers Models and factory custom civilian sporters made with DST?   just seems like I've seen one somewhere-----maybe one of GACuster's rifles in the museum in Monroe MI----a long time ago.

$125,000.00!!!!!
Now THAT is a bid!
A couple of years at the Baltimore/Timonium antique gun show a guy had a trapdoor officers model that was owned by General/President Grant. He had papers and heritage to go with it. I don't remember what trigger it had. I think he was asking $75,000.00 on it. I didn't make an offer, but he did let me look at it. Very pretty guns, the officers models.
The real pretty one is the Marksman model. It had a single set trigger and different engraving than the standard officers model. I don't remeber ever seing an original with double set triggers but have seen some at a couple of shoots that I would assume were done custom.
Does anyone know if the Long Range models had set triggers?
Now ya all got me wanting to dig out my trapdoors! Darn it!
