I put a single set trigger in a trapdoor once, (or I should say I hired a will known single shot gunsmith to do it for me). I never liked it. Id did not work well, as I recall. I also believe you have to move the rear tang screw because on a regular trapdoor the tang bold enters the trigger plate in such a way as to interfere with the set trigger mechanism. On my rifle, I extended the barrel tang so I could mount a Tang sight, and moved the tang screw far enough to the rear to stay out of the way of the set trigger.

I am not saying it cant be done, but it does involve a certain amount of extrawork that you dont normally have to do. I would be very interested in a report as to how your project comes out because I may want to try it again. Good luck, Joe S

I thank all who gave their advise. I will keep posted as progress begins. I am just at the "parts-finding" stage of this project so it may take some time. Thanks again for a great forum with very knowledgeable people who are willing to give help to those (me) in need.

May I recommend Ed Knisley for parts. He usually has an ad in the classified section of the Juornal. Great guy and very helpful. Normally has many grades of parts to fit your project and make it look right.

I have a picture of a custom Trapdoor Sporter built by a guy in Michigan....BEAUTIFUL!! If I remember right, he said he got Hawken rifle parts from Track of the Wolf; lock, trigger guard, set triggers. The lock is set up with a fly so you don't have that to contend with. Can email the picture if interested. Emery

I have a COPY of a Marksman rifle that I am well pleased with. Treebone stock fancy, single set trigger, engraved lock/receiver. It makes an outstanding looking rifle. Oh by the way it shoots very well. I used all Springfield parts, except the set trigger, it was a kit. Tumbler was the biggest problem.

For what it is worth, below is a picture of two trapdoor locks.  The top one has a tumbler from an original officers model which I was lucky enough to find.  Not sure how they cut the mortise as it is deeper than it is wide and located in the center of the tumbler.  The bottom picture is a more conventional fly that I put in a lock for a current project.  If you want to use set triggers because of the appearance, that is a personal thing.  If you are concerned about trigger pull however, careful tuning of the lock can result in a crisp 3# let off with a single lever trigger.

Below is a pic of the gun that the top lock is in.

That is one elegant rifle.  A well done Trapdoor seems to make a beautiful, slim, and trim rifle, almost like a fine shotgun.  How about a full length view.  Is that a slimmed up original hammer or a substitute?  Who did the case coloring?

The hammer is an original Springfield hammer that I filed a bit.  Color Hardening was done by Case Color Co.  Other tid bits....water buffalo butt plate and forend cap.  Cant see it well in the pics but the front of the action was reshaped to an angular shape to pick up the flats of the barrel.  The stock appears to be maple but it is actually a wierd piece of english sap wood heavily stained.

OK, now I must add one more item to my "Gotta Havit" list!  Undecided Now I see why the sporters I have heard of were regarded as attractive...this is a far cry from the clunky military guise.  Congratulations on a great job on your Trapdoor!  Smiley

I used to be happy to think of trapdoors much like I do martinis.  This was affordable and practical.  But I have a habit of stopping in Jim's shop from time to time and I have seen this and many other rifles - quite painful actually.  To suddenly have a pressing hunger for something that was not even mildly interesting just hours earlier.

Should you ever find yourself anywhere near the south side of Minneapolis (and I don't mean Kansas), you ought to stop in to Muzzleloaders Etc.  You never know what is lurking in there...

Has anyone thought about using the rifle shoppe fly and a hawken double set trigger off of one of the CVA rifles or something? Or even one of the setups from muzzleloader builder's supply as they have them in several sizes.  Now on a slight tangent what's the taper on the rifle in the pictures octagon barrel?  I am doing a similiar project and planning on using the octagon barrel.

Beautiful TD Gun Smoke!  I have a TD carbine that was re-barreled to 38-55.  It would be ideal for a DST project.   Smiley

I'm installing a double set trigger in my Peabody and I'm using a nice double set trigger from C. Sharps Arms, thier  Sharps model 1874 and their tumbler with the fly also, and the tumbler fits perfectly into the lock. This same tumbler may work in a trapdoor too, not sure, and you can't beat the quality of the double set trigger from C. Sharps, all CNC machined, not castings. I have used a lot of parts from the rifle shop and they are good quality too.
