Just joined up..

My interest in firearms has been largely leverguns but recently I seem to have caught the single shot bug.  I have a couple of Martini sporters and an original Cadet but my latest acquisition is a 1918 built Win 1885 Low Wall in .22 WCF.  I have to say I am really taken with the elegance of the 1885 models.  Unfortunately, they don't often turn up down here in Australia.  I'm on the lookout for one in .45-70.

Welcome aboard Sandgroper! I understand there are a lot of high wall Winchesters down under. You might want to visit this web-site also and look here and on the other site for posting by Bert H. He has brought back highwalls from down under and posted a link to an auction site from your country.

I hope this helps and again I hope you enjoy your time here on this site.

Sandgroper, welcome aboard. Regarding your .22 WCF. You should slug the barrel before loading. I have recently been told that that caliber used .228 diameter bullets. I am in the process of restoring a Lowall in that caliber. I had always thought of .22 WCF as just a black Powder version of the Hornet and I would have started shooting .224 or .225 Diameter bullets. Have not slugged mine yet but will. If it is that large I will have to bore out a base band on a Hornet mold to cast .228. Regards, FITZ. Smiley

The 22 WCF is in fact a .228 bore. I found it was a pain to shoot with black powder.
The 22 Hornet was developed to use .22 RF barrels but the brass was 22 WCF. this is why you will find hornets with both .223 and .224 barrels. The .223 mostly beeing earler using what ever barrel gthat could be had.

Hi Sandgroper,

Great to see another Aussie... I am located in the West, south of Perth. I agree with you, Winchester Highwalls are very nice rifles. They are here, but not in good numbers - unfortunately. Low Walls pop up from time to time, but the last original production Highwall I heard of foresale at a 1/2 reasonable price was near 2 years ago. I was looking for one during that time but gave up and rebuilt a Browning. If I hear of anything, I will certainly let you know... Best of luck...

cheers,

Cam...
