Please stop! You're killing us! Wink Why not just buy everything the guy has in the way of single shot rifles? Sounds like they're all way too cheap!
Yes, you can use .357 cases to make a .38 Long, but a .38 Special case works better, as it requires no trimming. BUT! You can't use the same bullets! The .38 Long is a heeled bullet, and larger above the case than a .357" bullet. You can get by with hollow base wadcutters, as they'll usually bump the base up to fill the bores. Best to get the correct mold and cast the heeled bullets. I use a Lyman mold for a 160 gr. bullet that is the correct heeled bullet, and works great!

Well, I did find out that the same guy has also a stevens favorite in 25 rimfire, and a rolling block carbine in .43 spanish that he has been shooting, he told me he will let the rolling block go cheap as he knows its not a collectable! What's that saying, ones mans junk is all of our treasures. I need to get the price on that rolling block from him.

For a .22 plinker a cast action might be better - would imagine it weighs a big less.

Yes, a cast action is slightly lighter, but not sure if a person could even feel the difference, as it would just be ounces from the hollow under the barrel.
The best Ballard action for a .22 rimfire is the #3 action, which by chance is cast, but it has the special extractor made to extract .22 cases without problems. The others extractors can be reworked to use in a .22 rimfire, but can be a pain at times when the case slips under the extractor, or doesn't pull it far enough out to grasp.
The #3 extractor is a plunger style, which moves straight back giving positive extraction every time.

You can use 357 maximum in the 38 xl its soooo close to being right. Be aware that the early Marlin Ballard actions were all cast and did have the bottom under the barrel solid. Thats why one should be apprensive about recoloring an early Marlin as there is a lot of slag in the receiver and it will open up.

The Ballards with the 3 line address used a reversable firing pin for rim or centerfire cartridges. That's the 3rd line patent. 97 1/2 percent of the 3 line rifles were cast. Occasionally a forged receiver will be found with this marking. Did the factory run short on cast receivers and grab a forged one? Who knows? Most engraved Ballards use a forged receiver even on the .22 rifles. I've worked on dozens of 'em in 50 years  R.B.
