Attached is photo of Peabody-Martini What Cheer mid range rifle in cal 40-70 PWC. The sights are serialed to the gun, 28 inch half octagon barrel, originally from Jame Grant and pictured on page 143 of "More Single Shot Rifles".  Cases are easilly formed from 50-70. They expand slightly at base but are a much better fit that cases formewd from lathe turned 11mm Beaumont brass.

LAST PHOTO compares loaded cartridge formed from 50-70 brass, empty case formed from 43 Egyptian, & 45-70 cartridge.

If you want to see any additional specifics please indicate which area of the firearm.

The bore is immaculate. I have not shot it for more than a decade. I only tried one load with 20 gr. SR-4759 with the Lyman #406169 (260 gr) bullet. That gave a nice 2 inch group at 100 yards. It's been sitting too long without being shot.

Tony, you need to try some black - after all, that's what it was made for!  70grs of Swiss 1 1/2Fg, 400gr bullet...  I'm envious!

I do not shoot any black powder. I only use reduced loads of smokeless powders. Years ago I had an Alexander henry in 360 x 2 1/4 which had beautifulk scroll engraving and a mint bore with that funky AH rifling. I could not get it to shoot and finally sold it to a person whose friend had one. I asked him what was the secrest to good groups with that AH rifle and he stated it was black powder and paper patched bullets. I have never "messed" with either.

How could you STAND not taking that beauty out at least once a year to shoot it?
That's practically criminal!
I think you need to sell it to me... where it will be loved, and shot regularly...  Grin

(wonderful rifle, really! )

BP actually is quite easy - the major difference with nitro is the case cleaning - unless you don't have the habit of cleaning the rifle after shooting...  I actually prefer cleaning one of my BP rifles to my Ruger #1 in 25-06 - the thing is a copper mine!

Very nice. I have a PM Creedmoor in 44-100 and would love to add more. I believe the What Cheers, Creedmoors and Kill Deers were the stars of the Martini clan.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!
