Reading German Proof Marks

As it is snowing here for the fifth straight weekend, I was just trying to stay warm and thinking of things I need to finish. One is to find out what cartridge the JP Sauer Patent stocking rifle I aquired awhile back was origionally chambered for. It is currrently a 38-55 and due to the light weight is a handfull to control with a case full of Goex Ctg.  Does anyone know what these proof marks mean? Thanks.

Flatlander,

Neat gun!

Had I not loaned out my proofmark book, I'd try to help. In leiu of that, you might log on to (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links), then find their technical department. There's a breif primer on proof marks, that may be of help. While there, you can also purchase a copy of a good book on proof marks.

Stay warm,

Jeff

Flatlander,

According to my book of Gunmarks, I can offer the following information.

Hubertus - Tradename of Inman, Meffert Gewehrfabrik, Suhl, Germany on sporting arms, c. 1839 - 1945.

The crown with the B under it represents - German proof using Mauser M-71 powder, c. 1891.

The crown with the G under it represents - German rifle proof, c. 1891 - 1939.

the crown with the U under it represents - German definitive proof, c. 1891 - 1939.

I'm unable to provide any information about the numbers stamped on the metal.

I hope this helps.

Flatlander, in the 1975 gun digest there is a article on German proof marks.  Page 185.   Joe.

Thanks all. I now have an idea of what some of them mean and will look up a copy of the Gun Digest. I knew this was the place to ask.
