Gentlemens:

I am in need of some good pictures of a Borchardt long range rifle to model a stock after. Do any of you harbor such pictures? Can you recommend any books that feature the Borchardt? Thanks!

There are a few good pictures in Seller's book on the Sharps.

Harry and Michael have the best photo collection however.  You might also post Al Sledge for a couple pictures of his rifle.

This is a modern one made using a military action, if you want I can dig up an original and take a picture of that.

Gentlemens:

My thanks to all for the help.  I have most of what I need now, and I really should have Seller's book anyway...

MP--beautiful rifle!  What is the white arc (I can't think of any other way to describe it) at the base of the sight?
Thanks!

Curiously as always,

Hello Glenn,

Sadly I don't have much in the way of original 'Borchardt Long Range Rifle' photographs. I will Email the few I have to you. The 1878 Sharps Catalogue has probably the most authentic picture. This is a line drawing. I'll try and scan it for you.

Al Sledges rifle can be seen in several pictures at :-

Just scroll down to below the Photobucket references to see them.

George Petersen makes a very nice stock for the Sharps Borchardt, it is figured on his website :-

Scroll down, it is listed under 'Customer finished Sharps Long Range' stock. This in the nearest modern reproduction I have seen of the original. It has the 'S' shaped bottom to the pistol grip.

In an Email to me, Al Sledge stated he believes that the comb for Long Range should be about 1" higher than that which is seen on most stocks in order to keep your cheek on the buttstock at long distances.

Just in case your not aware of it, there is very, very little wood between the top of the pistolgrip and the stockbolt hole, due to the odd angle that the stockbolt comes out of the rear of the action. A higher comb would help remedy this problem somewhat.

I also have a copy of an article on the original Borchardt with some pictures of the early Long Range Models including some of the first that were used at the Creedmoor Range.

Not to hijack the thread from hst, but while you guys have your pictures of original long range rifles out, does anyone know of an ORGINAL long range model of the Winchester high-wall, or did that particular rifle come along to late to be made in a long range, since that game was on the wane by 1885?  I honestly don't recall this issue ever being addressed, but if there WERE a long range high-wall, I would expect it to be pretty much like the musket  for the butt stock but having a sporter style fore end.  Is there anybody out there to comment on that?

TIA, Froggie

It’s a piece of thick leather (moose, what else).  I shoot with my thumb over the top of the pistol grip and the leather protects the web of hand from the rear sight.  Caliber is 45-70, I  use a two diameter 550 grain bullet that I can seat way out, a true MOA rifle that shoots as good as it looks.
