Brent, I've thought of backboring in the past in various applications.  I think I've seen a couple at the 22rf-onlymatches at EG.

out of curiousity.  Now much larger than the nominal 22 bore do you drill and ream the back-bored bore?  How do you get a precise crown?  Do you think that any turbulance in the enlarged portion of the bore has any effect on accuracy? As I recall the escaping gasses mover faster than the bullet
maybe we should move this from collecting to gunsmithing?

DW,
My rifle is a Winchester Low wall with a #2 full octagon barrel.  It was bored out to about 5/8" - I could measure to more precise.

The liner is Lilja that was cut and crowned before it was run into the reamed barrel, so getting the thing crowned was easy - it was done before it was put into the barrel.

I did put a very thin brass tubing in the muzzle and  held it with a set screw to collect the fouling that accumulates inside the back bored section, but after a while, I got tired of this, so I just regularly swab it out with a shotgun rod and brush and good solvent.

All I can say is that it is the single most accurate rifle I own by a good margin.  Although built to be an offhand rifle, it will run with anything from the bench as well.  So, I guess I would say that, no, I don't think there is a turbulence issue.

Here is a picture of one of my # 4's that I restocked so I could shoot it.  It is in excellent condition other than most of the case is gone but the action is super tight and the bore is excellent.  All the edges are crisp and clean.  The stock is up sized to be more comfortable for an adult as well as the forearm.  It looks a little weird, but I like and that is what counts.  You can carry it all day with one hand and squirrels don't like it.
