Neidner 22LR on a Fahrquarson action??

I purchased a 22LR on a large Fahrquarson action only because it had Niedner-Dowafiac, Michigan on the barrel (I am located in SW Michigan). The forend was made up of some spare 1x2's and the stock had some holes (purposes unknown). The barrel was turning plum. I am having the rifle restored with a new forend.

Has anyone seen such a combination? It's a huge action for such a tiny cartridge.

No, and I am curious as to how it was done!  There must have been something done to make the firing pin hit the .22 rim correctly.  The usual choices would be to weld or bush the block and replace the firing pin (which was probably the wrong shape and size anyway), or to somehow alter where the block sits in the frame, or to machine the barrel blank so that the chamber is offset at the rear.  It is hard to imagine anyone going to all that trouble to make something as unlikely as a .22 Fahrquarson, but people are strange.  Does it shoot well?

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

More than likely if it's marked Niedner, it may well have been adapted with his firing pin system, which could easily be bushed to relocate the pin to the rimfire location.
I'd love to see pictures of it sometime!

marelinguy,
I'll post a photo as soon as I get the gun. It should be ready within the next few months.

I am in the process of assisting a freind restoring a Peabody Martini Long Range that also was converted to .22 Long Rifle by A.O. Niedner.
It was nicely done and is probably a tackdriver. He did nothing to the Buttstock, just rebarrelled it with a new prone style forend and converted the action to Rimfire. We have located an original Long Range barrel and Forend in the Peabody .44 Long Range caliber.  You must remember that at one time these Rifles were not at all popular. If it were not for Niedner and people like CC Johnson they would have gone to the dump or the metal pile. In fact I believe many did. The obsolete calibers just were not available. When you found the old ammo it was expensive $7-$20 a round and unreliable. Balloon head or Folded head cases that split the first time you fired them. There was no one making all the reproduced Ammo we have today. And many of the old cases could not be made up from available brass. Read George Nontes book "Old Cartridges from New" if you want to understand what it took to shoot some of these old Rifles.A friend of mine used to pay $10-$20 for model 1886 Winchester's and Rebarrell them to 45-70 or .33 Winchester. And then even the .33 Ammo went south. Well, enough of my ramblings. Good luck with your project. Regards, FITZ.

If your friend want to sell the Niednaer-Martini 22 LR I might be interested. I live in the SW Michigan area and Dowagiac is less than 30 miles from my home.

If you can share with me what it says on the barrel, Niedner Rifle Corp or A.O. Niedner plus tell me the number and letters if any on the bottom of the barrel I’ll see if I have any information.

Niedner (need-near) not Neidner

MP,
The rifle is being worked on ca. 50 miles from home. As soon as it returns home I'll send you the information.

Tony, the Rifle is not for sale. The Long Range barrel we found pulled up exactly right and the forend is a perfect fit. All we need to do to comlete it is convert the breech block back to center fire and correct the extractor. The Buttplate had been replaced but fortunately the stock itself was not changed in any way. So a new buttplate will need to be made. Fortunately we have an original Long Range example to work from. Thanks for the interest. Regards, FITZ.
