HI GUYS & FROGGIE;
mr. Frog; enjoyed your artical on the Lyman -Ideal tool in the Journal as I had bought a box of tools and dies not knowing what I was getting for sure. After getting, I then knew I did'nt know what I had. All is now well --but I have one set of handles that the hole is larger than the regular sized tool the dies just drop in no threading in at all. what do I have??
Thanks
Have a Nice Day
Ray

Hi back atcha Ray.  BTW, I am one of the guys at last check!  Grin

I have read about but have not seen a variant of the tong tool for one of the larger rifle cases that was too fat to go into one of the regular dies.  The 348 caliber is coming to mind, but I'm not sure.  I thought that was threaded to a larger diameter though.  I'll have to get back to you if somebody doesn't beat me to the punch, but if the handles have no threads at all, they have no way to secure the dies, so I doubt this set is original from Lyman unless somebody sent out a serious error in manufacturing and it went undetected.

FWIW, I have also seen an early (nickel plated) handle with a much smaller than normal hole, this one designed for little dies to load the .25-20 SS.

Based on the handles I have had in hand and seen discussed, anything other than the standard (just under 5/8 X 30 tpi) die configuration is pretty rare.

Hi Froggie
Ya I 'd kinda knew you were one of the guys, a little more on these handles --they are like new aluminum? alloy , marked Ideal, hole threaded larger than the 5/8 x30. fine thread, new type handle with the adjustment hook thinggee feature. anyhow thats that .
Still playing with the buggering primers in the flash  hole. I went down to 7.5 grs. unique before the little puckers ( spelled with a P) went flat like they should be .
So nuf fer now
Have a Nice Day

There was a site called " the 310 outpost" on line but I dont know if its still up. You can do a Google search for " Lyman 310 loading tools ".....
There are several pages of good stuff about them. Cool

The larger handles were for the 348 Win cartridge, and of course they took the larger-size dies as well. I've seen this variant listed for only the 348, but it should also work for the various 50 cals if you could find anyone to make dies for it.

The larger handles are not very useful but they are rare, and you could probably trade them for some other tong tool goodies. They're worth almost twice as much as the regular handles.

I have a fair supply of Lyman 310 stuff, PM me if interested in a trade.
Good luck, Joe

Hi Joe
Thanks for the info
I would be interested in a trade for something of more value to me I don't have anything for the big hole dies (if that is the proper term)
