Visit our San Diego Schutzenguild website and read Jack London's account of the 1901 Schutzenfest in San Francisco. Fred Ross, Harry Pope, Wm Hayes and many more were there and shot for ten days. 100 years ago San Francisco was the Schutzen Capital of the USA;

Schuetzenbob

I've just begun to read it, but do you know where the main event actually occurred? It sounds like they took the ferry, so they could have been anywhere in the bay area.  I don't recognize where it was they went.

I am a bit interested since I worked in and around Walnut Creek for a few years and worked (as a consultant) with the Industrial Waste Division of San Francisco for those years.

Bob, thank you so very much for posting that.  Where is the original text published?  I really enjoyed seeing that great event through the eyes of one of our great writers.  I wonder if any of our other literary lights have written similar.  One whonders how a Mark Twain,  Ambrose Bierce, Ring Lardner, or Ernest Hemingway would have described it,

Hi Chris,

I'm sure you're more familiar with the bay area than I am, so far, I think that Shell Mound Park (Schutzen park) was in Emeryville, which is south of San Francisco;

We're going to have lots more information on the match in the near future.

Wayne, I've looked for these articles for the past year or so, I found them in a book titled "Jack London Reports" published in 1970 by King Hendricks and Irving Shepard. If you contact me off the board, I can teel you where to find a copy.

Chris,

  Haven't read the article yet but if you've got an exact date I'm sure there'll be a full description of the match in S&F with possibly a description of where the park was located.

Pete:

Schuetzenbob will have to supply the exact dates, I'm staying with events in the midwest.

Referring to wikepedia and the resulting references to the art on the mudflats and by the Bay Bridge tells me that its almost due east of San Francisco across the bay at the east end of the Bay Bridge.  Makes me wonder where they fit a rifle range, but I'll wait for Schuetzenbob to elaborate.

  My understanding is that much of the bayside area east of SF Bay was sparsley populated with farms and smaller towns in that era.  "Shell Mound" would indicate -- probably-- a waterside location where either NA or early commercial watermen proccessed clams & etc.  They are a reasonably common feature in other areas of the country in both feshwater and salt water areas. some were very large.  often they were later mined out and the shells burned for lime.  With the plethora of recent books on the SF earthquake and fire; some have decent compomporary maps of the area.  I've read several and wish I had looked closer at them.

Well, here's what I came up with as to a location. To Quote S&F----

  "California Schuetzen park is the property of the California Schuetzen Club, or rather the California Schuetzen Park Association, from which it is leased by Andrew Brehm. It is a mile south of San Rafael, a suburb of San Francisco in Marin County, and contains fifty acres of land."

  A coupla issues previous to the above shows a picture of the park from an elevated position showing it and the "bay". Looks to be right on the shore, or very close to it.

  To quote- "The picture that appears with this is a view of the park and the bay from the old Indian mound of shells from which the name of the park was derived. The ranges are on the bay side and partly hidden by the trees."

Waaay back when I was gunsmithing in Oakland, CA, I heard about early 20th century Schuetzen shooting done in Emeryville, which is right on the Bay between Oakland and Berkeley, just north of the SF Bay Bridge.  I don't think the name of the club/park was ever mentioned.

I'll try to answer some of your questions as best I can;

#1 The Schutzen match itself was held from July 15 to July 24, however the shooting and celebrating started a week before and continued long afterward.

#2 There were several large Schutzen ranges in the bay area, at that time Schutzen shooting was very important. The match was held at Shell Mound Park, which was east of the City of San Francisco in an area which is now the City of Emeryville, which is just north of Oakland at the end of the Oakland Bay Bridge. Emeryville conducted an archaeological dig in the Shellmound area and unearthed thousands of fired 22 RF cases.

I just finished reading all the articles.  They are magnificent.

They do a great job in capturing the spirit of the event, and a lot of mundane details that are lacking in other reports.  A large part of the articles read like poetry.  He also describes various habits and approaches of the marksmen.  I recognise some I have tried and discarded, and some that I use.  In the latter articles he gives a great description of the pressures on the schuetzen, and nails it.  I have to wonder if maybe London did his share of competetive shooting to describe it so well.

Thanks, schuetzenbob, for posting them.

Pete, did you notice that the King match was 200 shots on the points target, just as in Winona?
