Hello all,
New poster here lookinmg for information. A co-worker has a Westley Richards Sherwood rifle that he is wanting to sell. I am interested in finding out an approximate value for this rifle. I will have it in my hands tomorrow, so will try to post a photo. It is in good-very good condition.Bluing and wood are very good except for 2 small places in checkering and slight place on bluing on front left of receiver. The rifle has "patent removable action" and "Made for the Army and Navy CSLtd" on the right hand side of the receiver. The left has Westley Richards" "Sherwood Rifle" and "5128" on the left hand side of the receiver.  The little info I have been able to find so far shows it as 300 Sherwood chambering. Bore is excellent. Any information would be helpful!

Westley Richards made  many styles of rifles with different actions. I believe that Sherwood is just the cartridge name. Can you narrow it down some or post pictures?

This is a falling block rifle and is marked Westley Richards Sherwood Rifle on the receiver. The caliber is given as 300 special cartridge.
Photos aren't great, pardon the foot!

dblgun, that's not a falling block.  It is a tilt or tipping block.  The rifle is made on the Martini action.  Really nice sporting Martinies of this quality are bringing around $1750 on Gunbroker - at least those that are well engraved and in .577/450 caliber.  Those are considered high prices by some, but nonetheless, they are real.  I know, I'm one of the buyers.

In this caliber, I would guess it is worth somewhat less though the take-down feature and high quality of Westley Richards from the gitgo are always in your favor.

So, I'll ballpark this and say - if it is .30 cal and it's not a .303 (a popular and favored caliber) - it is worth maybe $1500.

This gun also sold for $1750 - I know, I own it

You might also want to ask over here:

These guys (and some of them are on this board) know a lot about this type of action and can tell you a lot about them.  Their estimates of values seem mighty low though - given my experience and shopping around.

Nice rifles indeed, and the Sherwood was considered a small deer cartridge in its day, a 'real' .300 round - so bullets are rather hard to find...
Takedowns are worth more than the normal ones, and even though tis one is a small-action rifle, it will certainly top 1,000 easily because of good condition and takedown feature.  It also has the micrometric rear sight and nice checkering.
OTOH, small-action rifles usually go for a bit less than the 'normal' size.  But this one is a W-R, so that adds to the value.  I'd guess somewhere between 1,000 and 1,500, depending on finding a buyer that really wants one.  1,000 would be a very good price (for the buyer), IMO.

Thanks to everyone for the help. I'll see the fellow who owns this after the holiday and will give him all of the information I have received. The rifle may be on the market after that.  I don't know if it would be better to post on the boards or at Gunbroker.com if the decision is to sell. Will work that out then.

Thanks,

Ronnie
