I found the stock of my 1885 cracked between the tangs, so I made a new one. Not finished yet, but getting there.

Nice with beautiful grain in the wrist.  This one should last.

Is it finished yet?  As in oiled/varnished?  If not, (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) has just the stuff if you want to pursue an original look as closely as possible.

The original stock is still in very good condition.  The crack runs with the grain between the tangs so it can't be seen unless the stock is removed.  I just wanted something so I can shoot it.  I am making a new forearm to match but nothing to show yet.  This stock only had a coat of "Watco" stain so far.  No finish yet.

Very nice indeed!   Cheesy

I really like the way all of that figure lines up to make the wrist a strong point.  On that low-wall that stock should last into the next century and still be going strong!  Could you tell us some more about the Watco stain?  Did the unstained wood have that typical light walnut color?  That stock now looks like it will finish up looking pretty close to some of the originals for color (at least on my monitor. 8) )

Regards,
Froggy

Marlinguy recommended the Permalyn product to me some time back but I have never used it before.  I thought I would try it on this rifle.

I have been using "Watco" stains for years and years.  It is available in Walnut in Dark, Medium, Light and natural.  The last I bought was From Shopsmith, but I think you can get it at Lowes and Home Depot as well.  It is really good stuff with "Wet & Dry" 240, 320 and 500 grit paper.
