Project this week:  270 Ren

This week I put together a project I started some time ago.  I bought this falling block works model J action on Ebay for $124 some years ago.  The seller threw in a newly fit, 20 inch x 1 1/4 inch .45-70 barrel and a very badly started stock for another $20.

I barreled it to .270 REN, which is a .22 hornet blown out staight to .270.  I was going to use the stock for a pattern, as it had been rough inlet and then filled with plastic wood to make it match the receiver.  The stock resembled a 2x6 with a cheekpiece, and was cut for who knows what kind of a buttplate, maybe a crescent style from a lever gun?

After dinking around with it a bit, a helm plate fit it right for me.  I re-inletted it back into the receiver a quarter inch, and offset it at the same time so that I could get below the plastic wood filling the inletting mistakes on the bad side.  Now, the stock was about 3/4 inch too thick on each side, at the butt, and needed reshaped.  I hacked about 1/3 of the weight off it with a gouge chisel, and rasped it a bit.  Cut the cheekpiece to fit my face behind the scope, and recut the remainder of the wood to have some semblance of style.  It's now ready to start sanding.  A standard high wall forend looks like it will complete the package nicely!
