I'm in the middle of redoing a Steven's 44 in 22 lr and 17 HMR and would like to know if I should Harden the screws that go through the action I made new ones out of oil hardening drill rod but was wondering if I should harden them and the new ejectors, that I made one for each caliber. I made the ejectors out of  Brown & Sharp tool steel.  I was thinking maybe harden them to RC 43 to 47 as you would flat springs. not to hard but stronger and more wear resistant. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Your thoughts on lapping my barrels realy helped.

John:

For a .22rf I would not think you will need to harden for strength, but it should help with wear.  Drawing to anywhere in the 40's would be fine, but I would be inclined to the high 30's and low 40's.

You want to be sure to quench the pins vertically if you have a close fit. This will help keep them straight.
