I've been trying to find a shooter forever.  Of course if I ever did I'm so confused by the various cartridges that they were chambered in that I probably wouldn't get it to work.

However, anybody shooting one?

GunBroker has one.  Not the first time this gun has been listed.  But it was rechambered to 45/70 and seems to be needing some work.  Anyone know a gunsmith who could work on one of these?

The world's foremost authority on the Comblain (at least the only guy I know of who owns and shoots one) can be found over on the MSN BPCR board under the alias of OLReliable. The gentleman will be more than glad to talk with another person as aesthetically challenged as himself.

I almost bought one once, but  it was just a little too messed up to restore.  It actually looks to be a pretty good design, and it scores real high on the "different" scale.

Any good single shot smith should be able to restore one, but it would likely cost a bit more than other restorations because you sure are not going to find spare parts. 

I have not looked at the rifle in question but I will see if I can find it.

Mr. klw:

I looked at the rifle and I think it might just be the one that OLR owned.  How many Comblains can there be out there with a rawhide wrap holding the forend on?   

You may well be able to talk to a previous owner...

There is a four part article on Comblains by Jonathan Kirton in The Gun Report magazine starting with the October 2004 issue. Hope this is of some help.

I guess there's two of us who own and shoot one! Is that something I should really admit?
Obviously one of the weirdest, and maybe ugliest singleshot rifles I own! Mine is chambered in the .380 Rook, and is all original. It is also not a military conversion, but rather a miniature civilian rook rifle, built in Belgium.
I do shoot it, although not in competition. The cases are formed from .38Spl. with a heeled bullet of .375" diameter. It's a fun gun to shoot, but it has a heavy trigger, and I've yet to figure a way to eliminate that, with the strange hammer and trigger spring arrangement.
Here's a picture of it, and my Martini Rook.

FWIW, these are quite ingenious mechanically - simple, robust, very fast to reload.  Quite good for a BP round, actually - even if aesthetically, they are an acquired taste....  Kinda like a Hepburn.  Some of these were actually still put to use in the opening days of WW I .  For those wishing to know how it works, just go here, and watch the animation: (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
