High Wall .22LR

I purchased a highwall winder musket yesterday.  It is a 1st generation two band with a Krag sight.  It is very dirty and I wanted  to clean it up and remove the breechblock.  I could not get the breech block out after removing the lever pin.  What have I missed?  Do I need to pull the stock and the lower tang to get it out?  How about the screw in front of the receiver that holds (I believe) the spring that snaps the extractor when the lever is at it's lowest point?  Does that need to be removed 1st?  I'm not familiar with the .22 rimfires so I'm going to need some help. Also, the front end wood and barrel bands were removed and the forend cut down to a sporter configuration.  Might anybody have the full length wood and metal that they are willing to part with?? Cheesy Thanks

Mr. OldWin:

If the block comes part way down and gets hung up, I suspect it is the hammer spur catching on the sear. Try pulling the trigger and see if that allows the block to fall.

If it is a FIRST generation Winder musket, check to see if it is a flat spring action.  If so, you need to take off the fore end and remove the mainspring before you do any disassembly.  Everything falls out after you do that.

Old-Win;
I have front end wood and barrel bands for a high wall musket. I don't know anything about these as far as different genreations, etc. but if what I have will fit your rifle I will part with it. If someone can advise about this issue???

Froggie and Glenn, I have an early flatspring and have removed it.  I've also pulled back on the trigger as I slide the block down but it's still bumping on something.  My center fire block's slide right out this way.  I'll probably pull the stock and lower tang to take a closer look.  I hate doing it though because the screws haven't been buggered yet.   Undecided
Don H.  I think what I have is a 2 band 1st generation.  It should have two barrel bands and a nose cap.  The front barrel band should have a sling swivel attached..  The forearm wood is rather straight and not the perch belly with finger grooves.  It's pictured at the top of page 154 in Cambell's book "The Winchester Single Shot"  Thanks

Try bringing the hammer back to half cock the block may be hanging up on the fireing pin protruding and catching on the bottom of the chamber.

Also, if the top of the lever is not pushed forward, it may be holding the link back against the firing pin and preventing the hammer from going full forward. If the hammer is not full forward, the spur won't clear the sear or the rear of the receiver slot or the trigger. So make sure that the top of the lever (at the link pin) is full forward and the hammer spur clears.
Good luck, Joe

The block is removed Wink  You have to take out the screw on the front of the receiver and pull out the ejector spring before the block will slide out.  Thanks everybody.  Bob
