Low Wall Reconstruction (Ressurection) - Chap 2

After having accumulated a breech block, extractor, finger lever, and hammer for my "free" low wall action, I am ready for some more assistance.

1.  The breech block I procured has a small hole that enters the firing pin channel from the top in the loading ramp; what is this for?  Nothing on my exploded views shows anything going into this location.  There is also a hole in the aft top part of the block that appears to accept a screw. Likewise this is not shown on the exploded view.

What is shown on the exploded views that I have is a firing pin  held in place with a cross pin, for which there is no hole in this block.  I am missing something or do I need a new exploded diagram.  It is obvious that the firing pin configuration must depend on how it is held in, no?

2.  I decided to make a link. I have gotten the profile dimensions off of a photo using Autocad, but I need to know the thickness.   Can anyone help?

3.  I have made a top tang screw but it was necessay to make several trial parts out of aluminum before I got the right pitch and diameter.  Is there a published list of screw sizes anywhere that would save me a few days of agony?

As a whole this is turning into a fun project.  I am still missing some small parts that I will either fabricate or procure.  The bigest problem is explaining to my wife why we will be heating with wood since I spent all the oil money.

Once again thanks for any help.

Bob J

Well Bob, it sounds like you are well on your way.

A bit more "fuel for the fire." - Sorry about that!   Grin

1)  Your diagram is for the very early variant.  The unthreaded hole is to allow gas to vent in the unlikely event  of a blown cartridge case.  The threaded hole at the rear of the firing pin channel simply replaces the cross pin with an easier to fit (in manufacturing) headless screw.  If you look at any of the later diagrams such as the one for the coil spring action in the NRA break down guide, it is shown there.   Smiley

2)  I'm "at work" so I'll have to leave this to someone else or until I get home later.   ???

3)  I think you would be well served to get both of the John Campbell books about the Winchester Single Shot...at $75 per they are a bargain, even though $150 seems like a lot of money.  The information they contain is priceless.   8)

I can't help you on the oil bill, my propane is gonna be a problem for me as well.   Cry

All for now, HTH, Froggie

All those screws may be purchased from:

Cedar Creek Screw & Machine
P.O. Box 1531
Woodland,WA 98674-1531

Small action parts may be purchased from Ballard Rifle Co.

In both cases, they fit. Makes the job so much easier.

Don, I had gotten some screws from Cedar Creek a few years ago and was most impressed with his work.  I had heard that he was no longer making screws, so would be delighted to hear from you or anyone else who has gotten screws from him lately.  When I reviewed them for the Journal, I was very happy to report such a valuable source and was quite sad to see it seem to dry up.  Any up-to-date info would be most appreciated.

BTW, didn't you have a 'wall project in the works?  How is it coming these days?

Regards,
Charlie the Frog
