At this point many were heard to remark, If Dorrler had remained in the race he could get an inspiration out of the situation, but Dorrler had packed up and retired. From this point on it was only a question of how many points the Doctor would make in his 100 shots. At the close of his first 50 shots his total was 1154, only one point short of 231 average.
A half hours recess was taken at 12:30 P.M., in order t oput frest bullseyes on to the targets and get a bit of lunch. The recess was a happy relief for many of the group, an opportunity to get the second wind for the finish. Many, however, had not started and they were behind in theirscores, and as the day was a short one, they were somewhat dubious about the finish. But the lunch had its attractions, for Mother Armbruster has a reputation for lunches and dinners tha treaches to the PAcific slope.
With the luch over the battle for high scores was resumed. There were three or four men on each target, and many felt th4e need of putting their shots down to the targets without delay. Dr. Hudson, in shooting in the last stage of his score, kept very close to his first 50. His ninth score gave him a total of 2069. It was now a question of how close to the 2300 mark could the Doctor reach. A score of 231 ould do it. From his ninety-first to his one hundredth there was a large group of interested people who followed the Doctor from his loading bench to the shooting stand, back and forth. His hundredth shot required him to make a 23 to get 2300. He went into the stand the coolest man in the house, and when his rifle went off he said, I win, and the marker came up a 24, making a total of 2301, a wonderful score, almost beyond the possibility of belief.
The details of the rifle and ammunition used by Dr. Hudson are as follows:
The rifle is a Ballard action, set triggers, stock made by Nowicki. It has been made into a take-down, with interchangeable firing pins for rim and central fire. The Doctor has five different barrels which he uses in this action, ranging from .22 to .38. The barrel used in the match was a .33 caliber Pope, using a 220-grain bullet loaded from the muzzle, and chambered for the .32/40 shell. The barrel is a No. 4, half octagon, 31 inches long. The sights used were the usual wind gauge aperture front sight, and rear vernier peep sight. No palm rest is used by the Doctor, as he says he can do as well without as with it, and does not care to add any more complications than necessary. He has fastened a piece of cork on the underside of the forearm, however, which he says is to keep the ends of his fingers from becoming numb where the gun rests upon them. Weight of the gun is 12 pounds.
The ammunition was Peters .32/40 shells, which had been fired a great number of times, Peters 2 1/2 pimers. Powder was a priming charge of 5 grains bulk of DuPont No. 1 smokeless, the rest of the shell filled with FG Semi-Smokeless, covered by a wad of blotting paper. Bullets were made of 1 part tin to 35 parts lead, in Pope mold, poured from an Ideal dipper, lubricated with a mixtureof 2 parts japan wax, 1 part mutton tallow, and 1 part vaseline (by weight).
