Newbie Looking For A Hunting SS (Read 4900 times)

	Hello, I've recently gotten interested in SS rifles, specifiaclly for hunting. I've got at least one of just about every other type of action and REALLY like SS's. I am looking for a new, modern gun preferably in .270 Win. I looked at the Ruger #1 but have read that they tend to be fairly inaccurate due to the fore end arrangement. I've looked at the Contenders and really want a rifle, not a convertible. I looked at the Dakota #10 and almost fainted at the price. Anyone have any suggestions on a good manufacturer? THANKS!

	Hi Aggie, welcome to the fine world of single shots! May I humbly suggest a look at the modern version of the high wall by Browning/Winchester? It needs the Dale53 trigger mod to be all it can be, but it looks plenty traditional and should be as accurate as you are. Good luck, Joe

	Joe, THANKS for the kind greeting and information!!!!!!! I HATE to sound like an internet "wimp" but I went to the Browning and the Winchester sites and did not find the high walls. Could I impose upon you for a link?

	Sorry Aggie, I don't have a link. I myself don't own any modern single shots at all, only the old ones, but I've seen & heard enough good stuff about the new Browning/Winchesters to feel confident in them. I'm sure one of the other guys who knows a lot more than I do will chime in here with some better info for you, we try to be a helpful bunch most of the time. Here's hoping, Joe

	Aggie, they're not catalogued by Browning/Winchester because they are special run, "limited editions" now. You can find them rather easily on gunbroker.com, gunsamerica.com, or auctionarms.com...just type in "1885" in the search bar of either site. The run this year is in the WSSM calibers, so you might find one of those interesting. There are quite a few of the older variations of the Browning version available on the used market as well. Both versions (Browning and Winchester) are for all practical purposes identical, modern made, extremely strong actions. Greg

	Aggie, let me add to what the other respondents have said in favor of the Browning/Winchester high-walls. The trigger seems to be the main shortcoming other than the difficulty of complete disassembly for serious cleaning (more important in BP applications.) If you contact my good friend Dale (Dale53) McGee via this board, he has come up with a totally simple and elegant solution to the first problem, and the second problem doesn't apply to you with the .270. Also, some of the earlier Brownings, which are somewhat less in demand because they lack external tangs can be found most reasonably on the used market...your .270 isn't in too great a demand at all, but with a modern scope anyway, the earlier models should be perfect for you. Froggie PS: FWIW, the Ruger #1 CAN be very good for your application, don't just reject it on somebody else's say-so. Try one yourself if you can find a used one, you may be pleased and surprised. 	Good point Frog! I happen to have a nicely accurate No. 1 in 7mm Rem. Magnum. This particular rifle is just as it left the factory, has never had the bedding tweaked or any tuning done, and will consistently group 5 shots of PMC Eldorado (loaded with 160 grain Barnes "X" bullets) into an inch at 100 yards. Being one of the older No. 1's, it also has a very decent trigger (for a hunting rifle) . Greg

	aggie, I didn't have any accuracy problems with my No. 1. From what I've read, one can fix at home any problem caused by forend interference on the No. 1. Search around some forums, such as AccurateReloading.com's Single Shot section, and you'll find a description of the cause and the cures. I believe DeHass's Gunsmithing Idea Book discusses it as well. Should you feel a need for a faster lock time, Brownell's offers spring kits. They also sell the well regarded Kepplinger single set trigger. The latter is expensive, though; I've not tried one. I've read two reports of what happens when a case fails in the No. 1, and in both, no gas got to the user's face. That's nice to know when you're shooting hot jobs like the .270. The Browning has better lines (to my eye). I really liked the way my No. 1 cycled, though. Indeed, I think it's time I get one again...
