Any information on the 25-21 stevens would be appreciated, as to loads and bullets.  Interested in cast bullets, not jacketed.  Thank you.

Hello 38-55

86gr .257 cast lead bullet with 5gr Unique is what I use for a smokeless load.  The "21" part of the caliber name means 21gr BP (FFFg) - if you want to shoot a BP load.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

In my Stevens #47 I use 5.4 grains of Unique, with a 86 gr. cast lead bullet, or 5.0 grains of Unique, with a 102 gr. cast lead bullet.
Both perform equaly well in my gun.

What twist are you using in the barrel, with the 86gr bullet?

Well I guess I'll have to check the Stevens! Since it's an original barrel, I've never really thought to check the twist. I just winged it, and tried a few loads until I got a couple that worked. Smiley

Original Stevens factory barrels typically had a 1-13 twist for 25-25, 25-21, and 25-20SS, however a 1-12 would work with the heavier bullets (around 100gr.)

If starting with a new barrel what twist would be preferable? I've been told as fast as 1:8" but that seems a bit fast to me.

God Bless!
