Bullet Seating Question

I have a 45/70 Shiloh Sharps with a long throat, as compared to other guns I have.  When I seat some of my bullets, touching the lands, the first lube groove is exposed.  My question to all is, if it is better to have the bullet jump to the rifling, or leave the goove exposed or clean the groove out and leave it exposed.  I do both target shooting and hunting and would like to get to one good load/bullet.  These loads will be with BP, but I also use some 4198 & 5744 loads.  Thanks. TimK

Mr. TimK:

It is common with target loads to have one or more grease grooves exposed. Target accuracy and ES tend to insist that the bullet be seated against the riflling  with Black Powder. Howsomever, there are exceptions to every rule so don't hesitate to experiment with your rifle. One thing that may help with seating the bullets away from the rifling would be a fairly heavy neck tension.

If'n the rifle shoots best with the boolit seated out, you could always leave the exposed lube groove empty for your hunting rounds. That would solve the mess problem and I doubt it would much affect accuracy and there would still be plenty of lube for hunting conditions.

The only way to find out is to experiment with your seating dept ! I to can seat some of my bullets out but the accuracy is lousey when i do ! So i have to jump them into the rifling to get the best accuracy ! Go Figure ! There is no easy short cut to accuracy , just trial and error ! JAGG

I have a Shiloh in 45-70 also & I seat my Paul Jones boolits out with 1 groove exposed. Depending on the weather if its not to Hot, I dont use lube in it But when it gets real Hot I lube all the grooves. Smiley

Thanks for the input.  I called "Paul Jones" last night as I am planning to get another mold, maybe.  He said about the same things you(all) said.  He noted that with BP it is better (sometimes) to let the bullet jump, but with smokeless it is better to put them against the lands.  He says he just leaves a groove exposed, and sometimes removes the lube for hunting.  Thanks again.  Tim
