Next Container Of Powder

When a container of powder gets low, I dump it into a new container of powder and roll it around for a while. So when the Unique plastic bottle gets low, I get a new bottle of Unique, pour in the remains of the old bottle, and shake and roll it to mix it up good. I've been doing this for years.
Some folks write about lots of powder varying, and figured that the mixing would take care of the variation. Now I'm not so sure.
What do you do?

Joe,

Doesn't sound like a good idea. I just use the current lot till it gets so low I can't use it any more and then throw the little bit left out in the yard.

The makers suggest you don't mix lots together. Smokeless powder that's sold to the public has each lot blended to work within certain pressure limits for given grain wgts, so you can expect the different lots you buy will work pretty close to the load you've found best for a particular gun. Mixing lots might possibly change these limits for the worse giving pressure spikes that might cause some problems.

Also never break down factory ammo to determine what powder they are using and the wgt. Powder sold to the ammo makers is not blended and is sold to them with proviso they will test each lot on their own and adjust their loads accordingly.

Joe,

I agree with Pete's words of caution with respect to mixing powders. Having done extensive pressure testing with various powders, pressures do vary slightly from lot to lot. Some shooters have also taken to sifting powders, while this practice does improve consistancy of pressure/velocity, it should be approached with extreme caution on the part of the shooter attempting to do so. Very slight changes in charge weight can have drastic effect on pressures.

Regards,
