Print Post
I have started a new project a heavy bench gun in 40-60 Maynard. I have started to reserch smokeless powder loads for it. I have come up with a couple of loads using 4759  and a load using 5744 in the 40-70. Niether of these powders is at the top of my favorites. Any sugestions for me. I will be breach seating a bullet that should weigh about 430 grains.

I can't help you with a BP load BUT .....    would like to hear of your experience with WP.  Please send me your loading data for this cart as I have built a "Redfield " in this cal but have never shot it ... haven't even got brass for it yet but will get some from Buff Arms.   Ken ( kenhurst1@earthlink.net)

As soon as I get it finished I will send you load data. You will see the rifle soon as it is comming to you as soon as I get it from Shuttleworth and get the butt stock fit and sanded out.
This oue will be unique and it will need some of your scratchin to finish it off.

40Rod;
I am still fairly new at the breechseating thing but based on powder burning rates, if 4759/5744 are indicated, then so will the 4227s. Also possibly Reloder7, though I'm not sure I have heard of it being used in a breechseating application. It would be on the slow end of the range of  slow pistol/fast rifle powders and would often be indicated for a cartridge such as the .40-60 Maynard in fixed ammunition. Your project sounds very interesting.

Mr. 40 Rod,   thanks for the forthcoming loading data.  I stay so busy that I don't rea;;y have time to develop load data & have to rely on others for a starting load to work from.  Will be happy to scratch on that CPA for ya. Start thainking about what your idea of how the perfect engraved frame should look . In otherwords, develop a mental picture of what would really trip your trigger for an engraved frame. I will try to download your brain when doing the layout before actually cutting the frame.   Ken

   Hi 40Rod,
                  This is not exactly what your looking for because I use mine for BPRC Sil. and C/B SS matchs but it might help.
Stevens 44 1/2, GM 1/16 30" long. Cases formed f/ 30/40K ,Rem. seems to do best, finished blowing them out w/ 20gr. 5744 and 210gr. lead 41mag  pistol.
Best loads;  60gr. 2f Goex or 58 2f Schuetzen, Rem pistol primer, 2 .030 ldpe wads, 400gr mos/ or 410 Saeco WW+2%.
Tried softer lead but n/g, have not found a load for Swiss either.
Tried 4759 & rel 7, best W/P load 20.5gr. 5744. loose cotton over powder and ldpe wads under bullet base. Rem. LP

Hey Mr. 40,   please keep me posted as to approx. when you should be sending action for nicely polished surface disruption work. I always keep a heavy backlog & it helps if I have a reasonably good idea when it will arrive. By knowing this,  I can fit you into a slot instead of there being a delay when it shows up.  Ken
