Is there a .223? (Read 9853 times)

	As you can see by my username, I need your advice. My shooting is mostly recreational, except when the coyotes get after my livestock. I tried a .243 bolt action with a scope. Didn't like it. Too surgical. Not enough romance. I want to get started on something modest like the Savage Favorite Model 30 (I like the lever action). It comes in .17 HMR and .22 Mag, but I wonder if I'll start to wish I had a bit MORE. Questions: 1. Does a gun like this exist in .223? 2. Where can I find the .17 HMR specs (velocity, energy, drop, etc) 3. How does it compare with the .22 Mag? Thanks!

	Newbie Welcome to the Board. If you like single shot rifles, this is THE place to be, that is if you don't include the various martini boards . Most of the discussions here are on schuetzen style target shooting/collecting so don't be offended if you only get a few responses. Hang in! The Stevens Favorite is strictly a light weight rimfire gun. Moving up in scale are vintage Stevens 44's, although some were centerfire they are not considered by many to be anything more than excellent rimfires. Centerfire .22's in the .223 class would be limited to vintage or repo (CPA) Stevens 44 1/2 actions. I'd suggest a Ruger #3/#1, Browning High/Low wall, T/C Contender/Encore or an H&R handirifle. Each is dependant on the depth of your pocketbook. Data on the new .17 rimfires can be found on the CCI, Remington, Federal and Hornaday websites. My $0.02 is that if you have a good .22 mag, you will gain little from the new .17's. If you don't have a mag, try the .17's first. Martini's Forever! MI-shooter

	Dear "Newbie," I'm really not too sure how long your name will do for you, as we aere ALL newbies once! Of course when some of the members of this board were newbies, so was Daniel Boone, but that's another subject. In answer to your specific question about the .223, please keep in mind that most of the "classic" single shot actions, including most of the old Stevens designs, seemed to do better with rimmed cases. In fact, there used to be a rimmed .223 case variant made in Australia for the many small Martini actions there. If, on the other hand, you go to a modern single shot action, such as the Ruger #1 or the discontinued #3, the caliber is immediately available as is. Another possibility might be to try one of the T/C line of single shots which come in carbine variants, or perhaps the new H&R series of tip-up rifles based on the tried and true break open shotgun design. Going up to custom or limited production rifles such as the Miller, Hoch, Cooper, etc, you also have many choices. This is just a quick thumbnail sketch, but HTH, and of course, WELCOME ABOARD! 	OOPS, one of the other members of the board reminded me that the rimmed Aussie cases were in .22-TWO, not .22-THREE. I guess you are stuck with a new action or some serious gunsmithing if you want a .223 single shot. Sorry for the misinformation. GF

	You might also check out the on-line used gun sites. Look for the modern issue Browning lo-walls. they made them in a surprizing range of cartridges up-tp-and including the .260 Rem (I WANT one of those myself) I havn't checked for the 22 centerfires, but I think I recall seeing the 222/223/ cartridge on their listing. they are a real nice handling classic SS sporting rifle chambered for modern cartridges. 	The reproduction browning low wall was made in the 223. While a not as powerful, the low wall was also chambered in 22 hornet.

	CPA Stevens [44 1/2] can be had in 225 Winchester-222 Rimmed- 22 Hornet etc. leadball

	The Ballard Rifle Company High Wall also can be had in varmint calibers although with rimmed cases.
