and just a friendly reminder, always replace the trigger guard in a rolling block receiver PRIOR to removing the barrel.

Interesting read - I was taught by old guy to always put the blocks back in to prevent that.  Also use automotive feeler gauges to shim up up extra space prior to wrenching.  I like the mini jack -great idea !

Excellent riflesmith's trick.

However, based on the foregoing, I will keep my original excellent condition Winchester 1885 HW 45-60 WCF barrel in its original receiver. This 1885 SS was made in 1886 and its barrel bore is excellent +. It has only kilt 1 coyote at 50 yards, but with 400 gr  FP bullets it could handle grizzlies-if the barrel stayed steady. Smiley

for my high walls, I had always put a breech blocking place and leave the lower tang installed.  A few months backI picked up a welded up block that is dedicated to that job.

  

People who think they know everything are a great annoyance to those of us who do.
