Winchester M85, Deer Gun Project

This is a Winchester highwall assembled as a “straight case chamber” rebored to caliber.357 maximum, a Midwest deer rifle. I’ve lent this rifle to my buddy Terry who will be deer hunting in Iowa this December. The target shown here is a 100 yard zero check. His last two shots were with a Hornady 165 grn. Spitzer at approximately 1900 fps. If he has any luck in December I’ll get a report. Should work!

Next time out, I think you could get more power and a flatter trajectory with 180 or 200 gr bullets.

The old faithful Speer 180 is a good reliable bullet with about a .3 BC. Barnes makes a 180 and a 200 gr with much higher BC's than the Speer.

You could get over 2000 fps with 180's and about 1900 with the 200 gr in strong rifles.

I've gotten 1900 fps with a 208 gr GC (358315) bullet, using #9, in a 28" bbl. While RX7 might be best for 200 gr, I think 300 MP could get 2100 with a 180 gr. I'd try 300 MP with the 200 gr also.

I think the 357 Max, is one of the best, all round calibers there is.

That's a really nice rifle.

Would you please tell who did the re-bore?

Thanks

One more thing - you might want to try AA1680 in your .357 Max.

I am using it to load .357 Mag. in my Japchester low wall.  I'm getting superb accuracy and surprising velocities.

It especially likes the Speer 180.  Notice I am seating it out somewhat.  That gives me almost a "cheater" .357 Max.
