Ballards may be weaker,

Ballard stocks, buttplates, receivers, breech block halves, and barrels were all serial numbered to match and done with the same stamps so font and size are identical everywhere. The action and back sure look Marlin to me.
A really great custom Ballard by a great gunsmith.

William Billinghurst is particularly known for his "buggy rifles". which were compact rifles easily stored/carried in a buggy.  His were often in effect long-barreled underhammer actions with detachable stocks and fine sights and/or a scope, the gun and all its accessories neatly cased.  But they didn't have to be in that form, and those made by others often weren't.  Also, Billinghurst did primarily make muzzle loaders, but he did "experiment" with cartridge guns late in his career.  Finally, that his name is stamped only inside the ramrod channel and thus normally "hidden" strongly suggests to me that he did in fact make that "nifty" rifle for his own or some family member's (like his son's) use.

My only regret for the rifle is that all its accessories - mould, bullet starter, screw drivers, etc. - are missing.  But it wouldn't surprise me if a case with those accessories and space for the rifle still exists somewhere.  But how to find it?
