Value of a Hepburn #3 Action

Serial on the 3000 range.  Barrel has seen better days.  Stock a mess.  Single trigger. What should I offer for the action alone?

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Don't see complete working Hepburn actions very often, but I've purchased beaters to get a nice action for $600 for a single trigger action. You can't buy an action cheaper than that usually.

I could use one to disassemble and learn about them, but have no clue what it’s worth.

If the action isn't badly pitted or banged up, I would guess that $500 would be a fair price.

Thanks.  But I really need an action in hand to get the information I want.

In the last 20 plus years I have managed to find ONE Hepburn action.  You will accomplish your goal much faster by purchasing a rifle with some undesirable feature from a collectors point of view.  Broken or carved up stocks, cut down barrels and shot out bores will deeply affect the value/price in a negative way.  One of those with a complete functional action under $1K would be surprising.

The last one I purchased was just that way. I saw it advertised on Guns International from a guy in Florida. I contacted him and we talked about it. The bore was absolutely trash with faint to no rifling left and the stocks were pretty beat up. It was a single trigger action that was in the white as no finish was present. The action itself was tight. The gun had been well used to say the least. After these discount points he sold it to me at a very good discount.
