We had a very special Germanic match during this year’s Octoberfest match.
The target was a beautiful hand painted wooden target provided by Barb Nicewanner, in the style of the vintage targets of the old days. Thanks, Barb!
The rifle this time was an 8.15 x 46 R Aydt that was previously owned by Charlie Dell and John Bancroft! This Spring, Charlie’s friend John was kind enough to pass the wonderful piece on to my hands. Thanks, thanks, John! Part of my intention with it is to make it available for at least some events so members at large can have the opportunity to enjoy a connection to one of ASSRA’s absolute greats.
We shot the wooden target, which had a black dot center the size of a nickel, at 100 yards. Bill Rose took the lead early with a shot touching the black. After that, Bill Wilson and Geoff Crowe fired shots inside the first ring that were so close to each other that it appeared a shoot off to break a tie might have to be utilized for the first time. Those shots held for 1st-3rd until Roger Henderson put a shot almost totally in the black on his final shot to take the lead. Bill Wilson calmly stepped up after that shot and stated, “There’s plenty of room in the middle, still.” He purchased 4 more shots and proceeded to put two of them in the black, including one closer to the center than Roger’s shot for the win! Everyone loved the target and the rifle. First place went to Bill Wilson, second place to Roger Henderson, and third to Bill Rose. Great shooting, guys!
Thanks again to Barb and John and to all the shooters that participated in the Germanic events this season. We always had a great time old schooling it and encourage others to start similar matches at your range. All you need is one rifle for everyone to shoot.
My apologies for the late posting of the results. Once October arrives, I spend every ounce of energy I possess indulging my passion for chasing the wily woodcock and the rest of the world gets ignored.
