A google search will produce a number of suppliers. and with that  a variety of prices as well. McMaster-Carr has them, as does Shars.com.  Amazon is another place to get them, Amazon prices don't seem too bad. You will want a minus set. that way the pins will go into the sized hole marked on the pin.

do you realize how many of them you are asking for? at a dollar per pin it'd put me in the soup line.

Funny. I have been searching eBay the last couple of days for the same thing. Looks like a new set there is about $130. Used ones usually are missing a few and still go for $90+

I have a Shars Kurt Vise clone on my small desktop mill and a 6” 3 jaw chuck on my SB heavy 10 and am very happy with them.

As much as it pains to say, a lot of my stuff is made off sure. My lathe, My Mill, my shop micrometers, my indicators. While they may not last as long as my Swiss made Micrometers, they work fine and are accurate.
That being said, in this day and age, when shopping for stuff, one thing you need to take a good look at is the shipping cost. At times I have paid a bit more for a product but made up the difference with a lower shipping price. Just something to keep in mind.

Thank you one and all for the responses ....

The best price that I've found is close to $130.00 ish for a whole set.

Because I think I only want 12-18 sizes I think I'm going to buy some aluminum or brass rod and with my drill press and a flat xcut & Single cut file make some.

My local metal supplier will sell me 24" of 1/2" rod for $6.57.
Given that each one only needs to be a about 2", that should do it.

Even if it ends up being too rough, I'll not be out a lot of $$..

Again thanks for the suggestions. (I'd never heard of Shars..!)

Bob

PS: The closest I've ever come to a lathe is my No. 2 pencil sharpener..

So, you can hold your "pin gauges" made on a drill press with files to .001 and be cylindrical over a 2" length? Huh

No disrespect intended. I'm not sure what your intended use is. There's a reason why pin gauges cost what they do.

If all you want to do is measure bores try these.

Jerry, 'None Taken"

Simply put, In the world of 'machining' I am lower than a hacker.
Filing down some aluminum rod was nothing more than an idle idea.

I'm compelled to borrow Jerry's tag line
"I'm not a complete idiot, some of my parts are missing"

Often, others far more experienced than I, come up with other solutions I had no idea that even existed like the
( (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) (THANK YOU Jack)

BTW, I was simply looking for a quick and easy way to measure bores as Jack mentioned
Sure I could slug both ends of multiple barrels but that's not really an option while traveling or roaming the aisles of a gun show.

Pin gauges are worth the money, but be prepared for the crazy cost of shipping something so heavy as a complete set! Mine go from .005" to .5" and they're extremely heavy along with the wooden block about 20" square with holes for each pin!
Fortunately Dave was traveling near me and dropped the set off to save me shipping!

For your stated purpose, here's what you need.  Easier and work better than pin gauges, and easy to carry.  I use these all the time on barrels.

Dave,
Have you priced this taper gauge set?  I have a set I think I got at state surplus years ago.. Probably spent only $5.  They run in the mid $200 range.

They're real handy Jack.  Sell a highwall, can buy a lifetime supply of them.  One for each workbench and a set in the truck for gun shows!

I got a bit lower price than that, but yes, they are expensive.  But, very convenient to own.

At that price I am going to keep mine in the safe Smiley. Sell a high wall?  I don't even know what that means!

maybe guessing and buying molds is actually less costly. Think of a drawer full of pins, most never needed, and then imagine a few spare molds. Get the idea?

I just bought a 250 piece set from eBay .250-.500 for $130 shipped with sales tax. Besides using them for measuring. They can help center a harrel in a lathe 4 jaw chuck. I have spent money on other tools that I seldom if ever use like a depth gauge and a planer shaper gage.

Now I am going to go back and watch that Holy Moly video a few times.

I have complete sets from about nothing to an inch, and I end up using the .2-.5 set a lot for bore checking, bore centering on the lathe, shimming to precise heights and thicknesses, etc.  They are quite vaulable to use in the shop.  But, casual use, the taper gauges are faster, handier, and more portable.

I use this, (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)   It may be a little chunky for your use as it needs a caliper or mic.
