maybe guessing and buying molds is actually less costly. Think of a drawer full of pins, most never needed, and then imagine a few spare molds. Get the idea?

I just bought a 250 piece set from eBay .250-.500 for $130 shipped with sales tax. Besides using them for measuring. They can help center a harrel in a lathe 4 jaw chuck. I have spent money on other tools that I seldom if ever use like a depth gauge and a planer shaper gage.

Now I am going to go back and watch that Holy Moly video a few times.

I have complete sets from about nothing to an inch, and I end up using the .2-.5 set a lot for bore checking, bore centering on the lathe, shimming to precise heights and thicknesses, etc.  They are quite vaulable to use in the shop.  But, casual use, the taper gauges are faster, handier, and more portable.

I didn't know these even existed...

For your stated purpose, here's what you need.  Easier and work better than pin gauges, and easy to carry.  I use these all the time on barrels.

I use this, (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)   It may be a little chunky for your use as it needs a caliper or mic.

you might watch flea bay.  I got a set missing one for about 1/4 the cost of a complete set. It will work for me.  I had to watch for a couple weeks.

I just got this set of .251 to .500 from eBay.  It was listed for 129.99 and the seller sent an offer of about $123 and I countered back with $120. Free shipping despite the 20 lbs weight.  My total was just over $130 with sales tax.

You will never regret owning this set. I have 3 sets up to 3/4" and use them all the in the shop for reloading, lathe and mill work etc.
