What scale of measurement is typically used on the powder flask's incremental stair-step spout?

Grains volume (bulk) not the same as grains weight.
See illustration below shows difference using Gov't 45-70 cartridge as example.

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

Wasn't gunpowder measured in drams at one time? Grams?

Maybe it was shot that was measured in drams?

IIRC, both powder and shot were once measured in drams, about 27 grains. Suspect that is on the powder flask.

Think the conversion tables used to be in the back of the Dixie Gun Works catalogs.

I haven't bought a new box of shotshells in 40 years.  However, on the last ones I bought the powder 'load' was listed in "drams equiv." and the shot in ounces.

I don't remember ever seeing a bullet weight listed in drams but all that proves is I've never seen it.  They could well have been.

German proof loads, powder and bullet, are both listed in 'grams', or they used to be.
