Digital caliper readings
Oct 26th, 2026 at 12:42am
Print Post
The other night, while measuring some bullets, my calipers suddenly started showing readings just under half what I knew was correct. I switched to mm setting, same thing, just under
half the correct reading. Gave it a couple nights rest, same thing.
They are wearing a Hornady label, so not Mitutoyo quality, but....
Comments? What gives?

Agreed, and while you are changing the battery out, be sure to check for any signs of battery leakage, and clean things up if necessary. It isn’t as common with disc/wafer batteries, but it does happen.

In manufacturing one CALIBRATES each measuring device at least annually.  I keep a 1" (and others) standards to check my calipers and micrometers.

Bingo, that was it. It's common sense, but I was intrigued by the fact that the readings were normal brightness.

I have a set of pin gauges I got from ssdave and anytime my calipers give me weird readings I check a known size before doing anything else.
I take the batteries out of my 12" Starett digital in between uses since I don't use them much. Both of my small dial calipers are still analog not digital.

I’ve never had a battery fail in my calipers, all of which have a dial. Wipe off the jaws, close them to check zero, done.

I take it a step further and reach for my vernier calipers as often as not. Not even a dial to worry with let alone a battery. As accurate as a mic if you know how to read one. (And yes my old eyeballs demand that I use a magnifier to read the scales!)

All of my metrological instruments are analog in nature. Heck, most of my stuff was made before battery ones were invented.

When I really want to know I use my dial calipers and double check with one or two Starrett mics.

If I had the digital type of caliper, would still double check. I'm a double checker...

From the earliest days of my apprenticeship 50+ years ago-

Calipers get you close, a micrometer gives you the actual size.
