When did palm rests become legitimate in Schuetzen

I am looking for information on the timelines for palm rest use in the offhand shooting sports. There was a time where "appendages where not allowed in smallbore and other sports. And I don not recall ever seeing any original German Schuetzen rifles with pal rests. And even Ballard #6, 6.5, 8, 9, 10 etc. typically are cataloged sans palm rest. Is there any documentation out there detailing the progression.

Thank you,
Charles

Marlin never offered a palm rest on any scheutzen model, but Winchester did on their 1885 scheutzen models.

Palm rests were a hot topic around 1900. In Dr. Hudson's book he talks about the heated controversy between those who hated them and those thought that they should be allowed. He was on the pro side. I loved the illustration that one of the antis made under the title "WHATS NEXT"? showing a fellow with a cage resting on his shoulders with his rifle resting on the bars. The same controversy surrounded scopes for a while but it was soon realized that they could help a lot of shooters with poorer vision stay in the game.

There was a shooter who showed up at the Zettler Bros. Gallery to shoot his Ballard in a match and he had mounted the barreled action on a long wooden pole. It looked like he was a trapeze artist who planned to shoot off a high wire! It caused a big stir from what I read, but nothing in the rules to stop him. In the end his idea proved to allow the gun to balance perfectly, but fatigue from holding the big old pole on his shoulder like a bazooka didn't let him win any matches, or any friends either!

I think the first factory guns to come with palmrests were Model 44 Stevens schuetzen rifles and Winchester Helm schuetzens.

I believe the guy with the pole was at Davenport and he was a Stieff (Famous teddy bears) family member. We have several pictures of him shooting in the shooting house during a match. It had to be a real pain to shoot.

He or someone who copied his idea shot at Zettler Bros. gallery in New York City also.
