WTB: Winchester 1885 Barrel

Its probably a long shot, but does anyone have a #3 barrel in 32-40 with a good bore?  I have various other 1885 parts for trade if that brings a barrel out of the woodwork.

I have other low and high wall projects in need of barrels so offer up others if you want, but my main priority is a 32-40.

You'll need to say what barrel thread you need.

I cant take off the current barrel so I cant give accurate thread measurements. I thought all number 3's were large shank and threaded for a high wall?

Sorry if I'm being dense and just don't understand the question.

You can get a fairly accurate measurement just by opening the action. Large shank .935", small shank .825". Enough difference between the two sizes that it will be easy to tell.

The #3 weight being large shanks only MIGHT be true of all original high walls but I have a 45-90 #3 and a 30-30 #3 with small shanks.  The large shank threads go almost tough the receiver side walls on the right side.  It can be deceiving however.  I had a 38-55 that I always thought was a small shank until I examined it closer.

I cannot get an accurate measurement but after comparing it to a few of my other high walls as well as my low walls, I believe that I have a small shank action.

This a pic of the action in question, this one looks just like my low walls:

This is a pic of another project action, the barrel goes much closer to the outside.  This is what my other high walls look like.

I have 3 #3 oct. Orig . Bbls. @ present ,all m85 wins. But you should call for accurate descriptions some time ? All are wrong cals. Two are exc. rebores , 35 cals. One is .35/40 Maynard chamber.another is .357 maximum chamber . Both cut w/ 1/16” twist ,8 groove , .030 wide land width. They shoot ! Have one more orig. #3 oct.w/ clean exterior but has been drilled & needs to be finish drilled to 1/2” to accept a liner. You may find one of these of more interest depending on what else you find . I’m in I’ll. E.z. To reach ,Hairtrigger @ 815 729 0460,Thanks.

Chawk,
I would say your top action is a small shank and the other large.

Maybe a stupid question...
In general, Which is stronger, hoop strength wise, , a small shank with more receiver ring material or a large shank with less receiver ring material.

I'd guess it boiles down to the material in each but typically what is the stronger material, receivers or barrels..?

TIA

I am not a metal urgent or a mental patient (well not anymore) but when I handed my small shank .22 high wall to John King at a Tacoma match years ago and asked him to rebarrell it to 45-90, he didn’t blink an eye but did say it should be used for BP. It was my first high wall and I didn’t know the difference. Thousands of rounds later no issues. Take my knowledge with a grain of salt and a margarita. But don’t shoot and drink, unless you are a Canadian of course. I still wonder what Tom Bodnar (may he rest in peace) was sipping on while I watched him shoot a rebar barrel 250 at Tommy’s.
