German Offhand Rifle

Well I found a nice German Offhand Rifle. I am looking for help in Getting it shooting better.  I'm getting a one inch group at 50 yards.
8.15x46R is assumed to be the caliber. a .325 Dia. bullet gives me my best groups. 14.5 grs of 4227 are used. Case length is in question. I am shooting fixed ammo at this point.
Anyone who shoots these rifles would be of help.
I have been an ASSRA shooter for over 40 years.
Thanks for your help in advance,
Jon

Slug the bore. My Buchel was A 318? Cant remember now, sold the gun.  Made a special sizing die at 320. Also used 40-1 worked best with a 200 gr bullet. but every gun different. Good luck in your developing load.....

The groove diameter can vary but, the bore diameter should be marked under the barrel. It's what the barrel is proofed with (no rifling).

My System Will is marked 7.7mm (.303) and my groove is .316.

The chambers can vary a lot. There was suppose to be a standardized chamber, around 1911 or so but, many still used their own reamers after that.

The neck of the chamber is long and tapers into the rifling. You'll need a case longer than 46mm (1.811). What I do is fire form the case with C/W at 1.93, then shorten it until it has a ID about .002 over my groove size or, the same diameter of the stop ring bullet I use. I keep 2 different case lengths, one, tapers to groove size for breach seating, the other tapers to the size of my SR bullet.

My best load is 12.0 gr 4227, either breach seated or fixed, with ~180 gr bullets.

I have had many of these through the years and the groove diameters have been anywhere between .316 and .323. I currently have 2 rifles in that caliber but one is a German stalking rifle and the other is a 71 Mauser that has the barrel from an Aydt offhand rifle. Both of these do like the stop ring bullets from Buffalo Arms moulds they make in .316 and .319. I've never had a rifle that required a case longer than 46mm and I've had some German ammo that had only a 45mm length. The main thing is to make sure that the chamber has not been modified after arriving here. I believe many brought home from the war ones were rechambered with a 32-40 reamer or even attempted with a 32 Win Spcl one. I'll have to go back through my records and see what has worked well through the years. You're on the right track with 32-40 type loads and I seem to recall some from 60 years ago that even liked some 2400.

I used my rifle as my only CF OH rifle for the last 6 years that I shot.

These are some of my targets, all shot with 12.0 gr 4227, using 3 different bullets. A .317 base band 311413 (the body cast .314) for the target with 3 groups at 100 yrs. All the other targets are 200 yards. The 2.051 group and the 202 score, OH target, is a PJ tapered spitzer with a .317 base band. The 3 shot group is a very old oversize (integral handles) 308329 mold done the same as the 311413 base band. All were shot breach seated with a 15x scope.

I have 13 German schuetzen rifles, 3 stalking rifles. 8 of the Schuetzen rifles are 8.15x46r, 3 are 22lr, 1 was rechambered to 303 and 1 to 32 Winchester Special. All of the 8.15x46r slug less than .320. I shoot a 175gr stop ring bullet or a spire point 190gr stop ring bullet. I shoot 12-14gr IMR4227, Remington 9 1/2 LR primers. I have never shot fixed ammo in the schuetzen rifles. If your rifle is late 19th or early 20th century, the bore size may be given in gauge not millimeters.
