Swiss 1.5 vs Goex Cartridge

Print Post
Well, I shot just about the last of my Swiss 1.5 this weekend at our 2 day BPCR match. I have more on backorder,  but to get me through,  I was able to grab 3 lbs of Goex Cartridge and 4f from the back corner of my dad's closet. Still in metal cans, lot from 2003.

Unfortunately 3 l s isn't really enough to do a lot of load development.  My Swiss lot liked a LOT of compression,  83gr, compressed .27", with a 535 postel (reduced front band) got me the 42 shot chrono group below.

Does anyone have old records of how much the goex liked to be compressed that I could use as a starting point? Im planning on using 4f as the priming charge with the old powder

I would start with the same volume and compression that you are all ready using and see how that works. When I was shooting I was running 65 to 68 gr in a 45-70 and seating a postel with just the front band exposed.

Start with the same volume as your 1.5 Swiss  as stated before. Weight that charge and mark the difference in weight. I use a muzzle loader dispenser to gage volume. Start from there . I haven’t use goex in a long time but I remember it being a lot
Harder in the boar after a shot than Swiss so beware of that.

69 grains of Cartridge in Winchester or Remington cases. cci 200 primer, .030 fiber wad and a 535 postel cast from 20-1 worked well in 2 of my 45-70's, and a 3rd one like Winchester large rifle primers.

My results in my 45-90 were just th opposite.  Swiss liked very little compression and back in the day Goex ctg liked a lot of compression.

Not surenif I just have a big chamber, or its the reduced front band, but the above load is for my 45-70. 83gr of Swiss 1.5, compressed about .27". Lead me to my highest silhouette score this past weekend of a 33! Makes me sad this lot is gone

My results were similar to BPJack, very little compression with Swiss works best for me, although I do use a 24" drop tube.

Group below;
First two shots High...rest in group
My Friends 45-70 M78 High-Wall--
515 Gr. Brooks 457125
Likes .1 compression 72 gr. Swiss 1 1/2F
Wax Wad lube cookie, Paul Mathews Lube formula,
Blow tube between shots.

Ill have to play with the next lot of Swiss I get. From what I can tell so far, Swiss seems to like no compression,  or a lot, but anything in between gets wonky.

With no compression,  I got really good accuracy to 300m pigs, but it would fall apart before I got to turkeys. Crammed more powder in the case to get velocity up, and eventually it calmed back down

I don't know about the very latest lots, but the lots of Swiss I've used in the last few years liked compression.  I've generally used between 0.15 to 0.25".  Someone told me that Swiss changed and people started having problems in and around 2013 trying to get it to shoot.  Ironically those 2013 lots were the best I've ever used, you just had to compress it like we used to with goex cartridge.

I went to 3F in my long range 45-70 Quigley gun.  Throated  to just hold 540 gr bullet in base band and engrave lands . 74.0  gr.  032 wad    I think. Called it my 45-90 short! Was 50 FPS under a 45-90 and alot cheaper to  load!

May the Bullet Gods be with you.......
