Dr Hudson's Nitro solvent

In a few old books I've seen reference to Dr. Hudson's nitro solvent. I decided to make up a mixture myself. Getting sperm oil not being a possibility these days I substituted it with jojoba oil. I must say it does do a good job at cleaning out smokeless (nitro) powder fouling in my barrels - both with lead and jacketed bullets (although in the latter case it just removes carbon fouling and not the copper). As much as I love the smell of Hoppes #9, a few other members of my household do not for some odd reason. Dr Hudson's formula does have a nice odor but is much less pungent so I guess it helps in that regard too.

Cheers,
Dave

Better keep a lid on it whenever it's not in use as the acetone will evaporate off the mixture quickly! And of course keep it in a glass or metal container too.

Sounds basically like Ed’s Red. Dextrin ATF has frequently been used as a substitute for sperm oil. Formula is equal parts Dextron, turpentine, mineral spirits and acetone. I used it years ago until I started cleaning exclusively with Kroil.

50/50 mix of Marvel Mystery Oil and Hoppe's 9 works well for me.

My new bore cleaning system. I find it makes the mundane chore of cleaning barrels almost enjoyable.

I've used Kroil for all sorts of gun cleaning, lubrication, and other things for years, but boy is it getting expensive! I keep looking for some cheaper source of Kroil, but not much price difference no matter where I check.

Great.
Get a few drops of acetone on your fingers, it’s in your heart in 15 seconds.
Today, we have wonderful solvents for everything, why folks go down this road is simply amazing.

It all started with the mouse trap.

Millions of ladies have used acetone to remove fingernail polish,I would think that it's relatively safe unless you are drinking it.  Shocked

LOL

I have an old container of sperm oil that's almost full. Should post a picture.

Careful Jimmy.  Greenpeace is probably monitoring this forum.  They will be coming for you!

🤣

ETA I wonder how old this is? Had it a long time and it was from an old garage sale. Think it's the same place I bought a gallon of 111 trichloroethane. 😮

No sperm whales were harmed in the making of this post.

I used to use TRI 111 when cleaning cameras that I was repairing.  Just had to be careful of plastics.
