Stevens model 44 and 44 1/2

Last month I won two auctions one for a Stevens model 44 1/2 which I always wanted. The exterior is in very good shape with standard sights. Unfortunately, the stock has been sanded. But will work for the time being. The 25-20 bore is a sewer pipe as was noted in the description.  I’m going to have this rifle rebored to 32-40. It’s going out in the mail on Monday. The other rifle was a model 44 also in 25-20 SS. The exterior is very nice with light case harding on the action. The description noted that the action needed attention. When I got the rifle I took the action apart and it was dirty and had two extra parts, a thin leaf spring and a small brass screw. The main spring was also broken. I cleaned it, removed the extra parts and installed a new main spring. Works great and is tight. The bore in the good part. It has light frosting for about 2 inches in front of the chamber with the rest of the bore nice and shiny. It came with a nice Lyman tang sight and a beech front sight. I took it to the range with my 30 rounds of ammo. 10 Jamison cases, 15 Bertram and 5 lathe turned. I’ve added some pictures. The firing pin hits off center but each case fired. The breech block shows the same off center strike and suspect it was made that way. I shot the five Jamison brass rounds to sight in the rifle and the remaining 5 Jamison brass rounds for a group, very nice at 50 yards. I adjusted the sight and fired five Bertram brass cases for a second group. Terrible, I can’t believe that different cases would make such a difference.  I need to find more matching cases. Anyway, here are the pictures

Look at the stickies section of the For Sale section at the 3rd entry Jamison Brass.
