Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

No idea who made that front sight, but sure not a Ballard factory sight.

My track record suffered on the action type, so I won't be too bold here with this one.

Have a look in Dutcher's Ballard book, page 291, front sight example "D", and see if you don't think this one is a match or close?

The image is a little dark. Hopefully it can be made out.

Not even close to "D" in Dutcher's book. D has no riser like the sight you have. The post might be similar, but on D the post is on the dovetail base, not as yours is with a dovetail base, then a riser with the post on it.

Okay, I agree with your findings. It sure is an unusual period sight.
Thanks.

The rifle has a barrel sight and a correct tang sight, I wonder if this front sight is Ballard, but just a variant not included in the Dutcher book?

There are no markings on it, bottom or otherwise, that could ID it either way.

It's not a Ballard factory sight. Just an unusual sight. I doubt John Dutcher missed any sights that could be factory installed. If you ever saw his stack of documentation on Ballard rifles before he condensed it down to that one wonderful book you'd know how deeply he did his research. I saw his papers before he began putting the book together back at one of the old Denver CGCA shows, and the stack sat on the floor and was higher than the table top! He didn't miss much I could ever discover.
