Thanks to some recent help from our esteemed journal editor and the Tacoma match director, I now have 20 Winchester 1885 high walls.

Year Mfg      Caliber
1914           .22 LR
1901           .22 LR
1887           .22 LR
1917           22 Hornet
unk             25 Hornet
1909           25-35
1887           256 Win
1887           30-30
1918           32 RKS
1918           32-40
1887           32-40
1918           32-40
unk             32-40
1920           32-40
1890           33-47
1886           38-55
1897           38-55
1886           38-70
1895           40-65
1887           45-90

I did end up selling 2 Ballards so hopefully I won't lose 20 years off of my lifespan by having 20 high walls.

Jack

Is your 1909 25-35 pretty much original?  Tom

Thanks Frank
Tom,
I ordered a Cody letter for the 25-35 which is a take down. Unfortunately that rifle left the factory originally as a 32-40 take down and returned a couple of years later most likely to have the 25-35 barrel fitted. It had Winchester scope blocks on it, the wider than 3/8” variety that I added. The bore is pitted but shows strong rifling. So far it shoots jacketed bullets well at 100 yds. I am experimenting with some GC cast bullets from Bull Shop.

You should probably get one more.  Then you would have 21 and you could change your handle from bpjack to blackjack!

Great idea Chris.  I probably wouldn’t stop at 21 though.  I am being a bit more selective these days though. I am a sucker for double set triggers though.

I might be able to get 12 decent looking rifles from this collection.  Several are not photo worthy.

Yeah I was thinking about that this morning.  It would be foolish to stop at 21.

I am not counting the crushed coil spring action I got for free. It possibly could be repaired but I use it for stock fitting.

When I rough in a stock to action fit which I don't do a lot of.  It was free anyway.  Steve Barber made a suggestion on how to fix it with heat directed only to the spot that needs expanding so that the entire action does not need to be re-heat treated

Looks like someone tried to unscrew it with the extractor in place.

It was from attempting to remove a stuck 219 Zipper barrel.  It is an action with the tunnel for the ejector so it has a very thin wall at that location.  I had to bore the barrel stub out until it was very thin and then I cut a slot in the end so I could insert an old lawnmower blade to act as a big screw driver.

Stuff like that usually happens when guys don't block up the receivers before putting an action wrench on to remove a very tight barrel.
No way the receiver would collapse if it was properly blocked before attempting to remove the barrel. Those thin sidewalls are the one weak point of the 1885 actions.

I ended up buying a block from eBay that had been bushed but not drilled.  I use it as a filler when removing a stubborn barrel.
