Scope Block Height

I have an .22 rimfire 1885 Winchester/Miroku that I want to mount a Lyman Jr. on for .22 bpcr and need guidance on how I go about determining what block height(s) I need. Specifically, what height blocks do I need (how do I figure out what height is required .e.g. 3/16,1/4" etc.), are both blocks the same height?  The rifle had been previously drilled and tapped at 7.2". Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Tom

Ballards may be weaker,

Since the Lyman Junior has no large objective bell you can simply buy the shortest bases made. It doesn't need anything taller to clear the barrel.

I did the exact same thing on my Miroku/Winchester LW .22, by employing the lowest blocks I had (3/16") and they work swell. I wanted low as possible because of the low comb height exacerbating a good cheek weld with highly mounted scopes.

Assuming the rifle's barrel is half-octagon and thus the same diameter over the length of the scope mounting field there's no need for differing height blocks. Unless of course you're seeking 200 yard+ capability then you may well need to have a taller rear block.

On said .22 I like having dual scope capability. Sometimes it wears a Lyman Jr. Targetspot and sometimes a "modern" Sightron Rimfire scope (which is on it at the moment). Have screwdriver will travel!

I am working on a custom low wall in .22 RF. The half oct. barrel is .930 across the flats. I had it drilled and taped for blocks. I mounted MVA block for their Winchester A5 scope. I had no trouble mounting a 1 1/2 Unertl target scope and shooting at 200 yds. The MVA blocks are pretty short and would work quite well with your Lyman JR.

The guy who installed the barrel on my .38-55 Rolling Block didn’t know (neither did I at the time) but I told him it would be an Unertl.

Eventually I ended up with a 24x Unertl. After attaching the scope to the mounting blocks, the clearance between the underside of the objective bell and the top of the barrel is about 1/16”.

This condition has worked well for 5-years, shooting 100 and 200-yards in CBA matches.

I did consider contacting Steve Earle to get a couple of slightly higher blocks but have not done it. Didn’t know MVA offers Unertl blocks.

Since this is my first time mounting blocks, I want to make sure I understand. If I order a 3/16” block for the front and a 1/4” block for the rear, I should be set to shoot from 50 to 200 meters. Thanks, Tom

Yes, might even shoot further than 200 meters.

Think they may be backward on the height. You should need a taller rear block to get more elevation for 200 yd.

1/4" is taller than 3/16"
