By the way!  Here is something a lot of folks won't get to see unless they own a Ballard.  What looks like 150 years of goo is actually just the raw casing finish of non critical surfaces in the receiver.

Guys, I am assuming these are likely a malleable iron receiver and not steel or else they are a very early and mild steel suitable for good casting performance.  ( ??? )

You may have to reduce the width of the firing pin. I may stick in the small rifle (or pistol) primer.

When you lower the lever on a Ballard, does the hammer move back into half cock like a Stevens, or full cock like a Winchester 1885?

Yes, as soon as the lever begins to lower the block the hammer is moved back to free up the firing pin pressure. Ballard rifle actions have a very short half cock notch, so it's tough to notice the change without watching the hammer position.
