Spitballing here, as much for the benefit of the newbie lurkers as anyone including myself.

I like the idea of the V-groove. Simpler than my attempts with side rails (that results in similar blind squirrel-like shooting)

Crux of this post: do you also guarantee the alignment of the V-groove toward the bullseye from your position with the rear bag. Ie: is the groove in a perfectly straight line toward the target, checked by verifying crosshair placement on the bullseye with the rifle all the way forward and all the way back when setting it up before shooting?

And is the rig leveled side-to-side during setup?

If I'm not making any sense I apologize. Middle of the night, can't sleep, a hundred ideas, questions, solutions for stuff buzzing in my electrified head. Chemotherapy in the afternoon beforehand tends to do that to me!

Since rifle travel is short during recoil, think groove alignment has little if no effect on the target. The groove was aligned by eye. I'm getting vertical stringing.
I think the setup is to rigid allowing the sled to jump up when the rifle is fired. Need some sort of buffer like you get when using a sand bag.
Sure is nice knowing the rifle can't fall over or off the bench. 

Sleeping at night, occasionally..

Sleep is highly overrated.

I'm at a loss for suggestions now, except one last electrified thought. Maybe vary the position of the sled clamp to the barrel? Assuming it's on the node at this point, maybe try it off the node for the halibut?

Maybe it needs springs and shocks, lol. Center of the wheels are center with the screw in the rest in order to reduce any spring action. 

I think it needs a buffer of some sort. A cushion effect like a sand bag.  A small sandbag at each end on the bottom of the sled? Hmm... Rubber? O ring?? Change the brass wheels to a softer material?

Yes, can vary placement of the sled on the barrel. Will try it.

Modern benchrest requires the rifle rest on sand bags front and rear. Many shooters believe the bags should not be packed too firm so they act to absorb some vibration. I think you are on the correct path for better performance from this rest.

Front rest is a Hart with a Sinclair Windage Adjustable Top and Protektor #2 Bag. This set up is heavy, stable and tracks well.

Rear bag is a Protektor Bumble Bee Bag. I use a Bunny Ear and Rabbit Ear depending on the rifle I'm shooting. 

All bags are leather I do not shoot free recoil.

I'm with Joel don't fill the bags too much, just enough  Smiley

My Bald Eagle Windage rests with extended leg adjusters for shooting up hill at Tommy's range.

Sandbag flat bottom for flat base forearm.

And my home built front windage rest with a U shaped front rest for curved forearms or barrels.

Sorry, I was not clear. By "Modern Benchrest" I was referring to modern bolt rifle competition for group and score at various yardages.

Dave,

I've been using a Bald Eagle front rest for 30 plus years
For the 'modern cartridges' I have a flat plate screwed to the bottom of my stock, which rides on the metal base of the Bald Eagle (no sand bag),
The side rails are snug fit to the metal plate screwed to the stock.

I let the rifle (18lbs) free recoil..

For the Single Shots I use the sand bag similar to yours.
