Many of us older citizens are having problems sizing photos for attachments. Not knowing web programing I am wondering what is limiting  pixel size and would it be possible to increase for us older challenged members?  Sizing programs seem like they want ridiculous funds for service.

I n case it helps, all my pictures are from a Samsung  android phone. I take the picture, then go to my gallery to edit it, and resize it to either 40% or 20% and it usually works

Seems to me something here on the forum has changed. Used to be a 500 pixel limit. Now it seems I have to size files down to 100 or less to fit them in a thread.

I always use my laptop and paint program to size and post pictures.

Don't even want to get into smart phones.  Sad

It looks like on a Motorola you need to use Google Photos to do the resize

My phone needs a third party app to resize pixels. Most seem to run $10.00 to $20.00/ month which is nuts to just size maybe one or two photos. I might have to fire up my old desktop computer with Microsoft Paint and see if that will still work.

Back to original question, is there something that could be done in software so no sizing would be necessary?

I load all my pictures to my free Imgur account and then click on the size choices there to post here. It lets me post whatever size I want since it's just a link and the pictures aren't loaded to this forum.
I'm very low tech, so resizing images is something I've never done or tried to do.

The limit is 500kb in size not pixels.  I typically take the shot on my iPhone and email it large size to myself and open on my Mac in the Preview app.  Crop to the desires subject and resize to 144dpi and 5 to 9 inches wide depending on the subject.

900-1000 pixels wide works great for this forum. There are numerous applications that allow you to resize your jpeg photos. I use Windows Photos and IMO simple to use.

You're absolutely correct, Wes, it is Greek, the kilo part that is, meaning 1000, pixel is a made up word from english "picture elements" and byte (a collection of bits) is a made up word to distinguish it from a bit).

Ditto Imgur, agree 100%, but I go another 50% and post the pics directly with no link-ing. I dislike links, and having to click on links just to see a pic.

Size selection is a piece of cake.

You don't have to click any links with Imgur loaded pictures. They show up without any clicking. Like this:

I use the BBCode link (for message boards and forums) that posts them without clicking on anything.

Looks like I have four choices.
1) Get new phone
2) Get new upgraded desktop for Windows Paint
3) Get third party host site to downsize
4) Forget about it and don't post photos
It really shouldn't have to be this difficult for us old computer illiterate folks.

There is a 5th choice.

You can always send your pics to one of us to resize and post for you.

I've done that more than a few times for folks here on the forum.

You are not alone my friend. The struggle is real. I desperately want to be able to post pictures and have tried in the past with dismal results. My daughter said she would show me but she is always busy and I hardly see her anymore. She is a prosecutor and just got off a murder trial where she was out of town and sequestered in a motel for two weeks. Always busy. I have had people who posted them for me in the past but I hate to ask anyone to do it.

I used to be able to post photos. All I have is an iPad and it had a built in photo sizer. Click on the photo, pick #1,2,or 3 for sizing and post! Simple! Then apple did an “upgrade and bug fix”and it eliminated the resize option, and now I can’t downsize or do anything to be able to resize pictures to post.😡

If any of you are still running Windows 7 or Windows 10, you can go to Internet Archives and do a search for Windows Essential, open it up and just check the parts you want downloaded for free. Photo Gallery is what you need and it allows you to size pictures fairly easily. Go into organize pictures and your pictures will show up and then choose resize, it lets you choose large, medium, small Etc. Microsoft eliminated Photo Gallery from later editions of Windows 7 and didn't put it on Windows 10 and It PO'd a lot of people.

Tom: I have an Apple. I went to the photo with 2 fingers click on it. Click "edit with"  chose Color sync utility. Top RH corner is an icon that looks like 2 rectangles in a rectangle, click it and resize to 144 dpi.
That's what I did anyway. good luck.

Why this was different, I do not know. You can't exceed 500 KB. I did find a way to adjust that, put sure had to look. Don't know why it was different.

Old Soldier, there are two parts to "size". The 252KB pic is great and it fits on the screen. The 447KB is also good but the size ratio is such that it is too long for the screen. If you control the pixel counts for height and length then the size will take care of itself. The pixel counts on the first image are such that the maximum height could be a few percent less to fit better and on the screen and the length could actually be about 10 percent more and still fit on the screen as long as the height was reduced proportionally. For a rule of thumb 600 to 700 is a good height and 800 to 900 a good width for a horizontal photo. You just have to make sure that it balances out.

Here is the second photo reduced to a width of 900 pixels which automatically makes the new height 243 pixels. Depending on the screen size folks have available to see images on, the length could have been say 1200 pixels.

You guys got me looking closer at my iPad.
I have always emailed myself photo to resize, if I need a quick picture resized, it auto resized when emailing.

I don’t know why I had not seen the resize program built into it before.

Couple test photos of different sizes.  One is 800 wide the 1000.

It is actually working very fast for me.

Tom,
This might work for you.  My iPad is 10 years old and still going strong.  I have also alway kept it updated.

Photo 1.  This is the original and the size is noted to the right in red.
By clicking the box with arrow, upper left, opens a drop down box.

Photo 2.  The drop down box.
The program is circled in red.  Click on it.

Photo 3.  The program that opens.
Type the size in the box.  800 in this example.  Hit done.

It will not change the original.  A new copy will be added to your recent photos file.

Photo 4.  Showing the new size in red.
