I recognize Mike Otterberg from the other photos I have seen of him, but the other guy is obviously AI generated. Someone took a photo of a shooter named Joe Gussenhoven and added a sport coat, bolo tie and old timey hat using artificial intelligence. I haven’t ever seen Joe wearing a getup like that. Just sayin’!

bpjack,

I think it's William Burroughs and Jack Kerouac.

When I google Wes Turner I get this guy.  Not that picture of the old coot with a goatee.

Lot of Wes Turners out there. Only one Mike Otterberg.

The shooter behind Mike is Rob Labs, and the cowpuncher is the seldom seen Steve Garbe.

The only question is who are you and what have you done with Joe?

Yes they are big and heavy but they hold real steady. Of course we were younger then. The rifle below is 40 + pounds.

Do these under hammer bench rifles shoot 2 piece slugs similar to the ones used in the heavy long range muzzle loaders? Are there matches today for such rifles?

Mine does. Not sure what the others were using. There were matches at Cody for a few years. Shotgunners took over the range and squeezed the rifle shooters out.
Here's a bullet I was using. 56 caliber about 600 + grains. Bottom half is pure lead and the upper half is 20-1 lead tin. My rifle uses two strip paper patch.

I'm not aware of any current slug gun matches.

That is a shame. A lot of the rifle matches at my club have gone away also. A couple match directors passed away and others just got too old or burned out to do them and the younger ones are all still working. All we have now is some 22 and center fire bench rest and three gun matches with those "black guns".

There is currently a rifle for sale on Guns International that includes the tools pictured. I assume the little lever press is to assemble the 2 part slugs? Years ago there was a Tool & Die Maker of German heritage that was a member of my Gun Club in NC that built one of the large guns and I believe he told me they shot 1000 yards and they had 5 minutes allowed per shot. I remember he had made a small paper shear to cut his patches precisely. The soft lead base of his bullet was hollow base I believe. He would travel to Friendship Indiana to shoot competition. This was likely prior to 2000.
